wakaru (Do you understand?) vs. wakatta (Understood?)
 

Situation:
You have explained something to a friend (perhaps you're teaching them Japanese). You want to ask if they understand.

Could you say either:

わかった？ (wakatta?) - Understood?
わかる？ (wakaru?) - Do (you) understand?

Would both ways sound natural to a native Japanese speaker?

”わかった？：WAKATTA” sounds like "have you understood?" at the end of total explanation and "わかる？:WAKARU?" sounds "are you understanding(or following me)?" during the explanations.

Both are confusing because one can not find they are questions or answers without question mark in written form.
