Yes there are kanji that are used for names only, with no meaning.

If you have problems with Katakana and Hirigana you'd best give up the whole japanese learning now, cos it's not gonna get easier after that.

Hardest part is kanji. Trying to learn them is like trying to fill a sieve with water for me, it needs alot of topping up constantly. ie i'm liable to forget the reading or how to write kanji I've not come across for a while.
I can guess the meaning of kanji if I'm in a pinch.

Grammer...I never found so difficult, but I learn easier through understanding something rather than rote memorising, hence kanji woes. Transitive and intransitive verbs I've made some embaressing mistakes with.

Keigo was drilled hard into me, depends on how used I am with using it at a given time. My old ojyosama uni everyone used redicious levels of keigo that always is good for a joke now days.

But yeah, kanji.

I'm currently working on a research project on the process of learning Japanese. This one was one of the many questions I asked on the survey and apparently Kanji is the most difficult aspect along with particles usage.

I have to say Kanji too... this and finding a good teacher. I live in Québec, so I speak french and began english at 8. Japanese I began last summer (2007, this summer) and kanji takes alot of time to learn. But yeah, it's only the begining ^^

The thing that makes learning japanese hard is finding someone to talk japanese with. Kanji is not really hard for me it just takes time.

That's kinda funny. This guy I interviewed said he'd been living in Japan for about two years and that he rarely got the chance to speak Japanese cause the people there kept on speaking English with him when actually his level of Japanese was higher than their English xD but they still wouldn't use Japanese with him.

I didnt study kanji yet, but from what 've seen they are a bit complicated, not only because of the number of them but because of their diferente meanings and pronunciation.
But for me the hard part is to find a teacher near by or print books.. i mean the internet as lots of things but lets face it, studying requires exercices and concentration, and i find a bit tiresome reading over and over on a computer screen.
The solution i found was to print lessons, but still its har to find grammar exercices.
