What is your favorite movie with Tatsuya Nakadai? - 05-18-2008, 05:11 PM

Hi!

Just a question for cine maniacs and all who love the classic ones...

What is your favorite movie with Tatsuya Nakadai, the best role your think he played?

(For myself Ningen no Joken is the best, but I like all that he did under Kobayashi's direction... But in another term of playing, Kagemusha is very great too!)

Still yet to see Ningen no Joken, so I'd have to say RAN (1985). Fantastic performance by Tatsuya Nakadai. (Although, I am a big fan of Kwaidan...)

Yes, very very good performance.
Ran was the first Kurosawa's I saw, at the end of the 80s.

When old classic japanese movies were available here in DVD, it was good pleasure to see him again in many roles.

Although he only played one of the three chapters of Kwaidan, the story with him is very excellent.

"Black River" from Kobayashi is more modern (in story) but very excellent too!

I just remembered another film I've seen with Tatsuya Nakadai.
Akira Kurosawas Yojimbo with Toshiro Mifune.
Nakadai seemed to replace Mifune in Kurosawas later films didn't he?

I don't think I've seen a poor Kurosawa film yet, and I've seen quite a few now.
(Actually I'm watching Red Beard (Akahige) tonight, so I'll let you know...)

Mifune and Nakadai in Yojimbo...

Yes, after Mifune broke with Kurosawa during the Akahige's stage, Nakadai was I believe doing many Gosha's movies while in the same time a theatral (playing Shakespearian roles) carreer.

I found Akahige a little boring, almost great actors are in, but I wasn't in good mood while watching it. So I must let it another chance.

After the fail of Dodeskaden, Kurosawa wasn't filming anymore, and when he came back in the early 80's with Kagemusha, he naturally took Nakadai as the Takeda's Shingen sosie. After went Ran, which is a japanese interpretation of the King Lear from Shakespeare. So Nakadai could have put all his immense talent in.

Note that in the 60s Inagaki has made a japanese version of "Cyrano de Bergerac" with Mifune. Good one, very good to see that as french!

Nakadai is in Yôjimbo and is killed at the end of the movie, but he's still here on the sequel (Sanjûro) as the bad guy too (but not the same character!). Good prestation in some Zatoîchi's too!
