Japanese section in 'Babel'! - 01-23-2007, 07:42 PM

Has anyone checked out Mexican director Inarritu's new film Babel? He did Amores Perros and 21 Grams before, so if anyone liked either of those then I definitely suggest this as its of the same mould and possibly even of a higher calibre of filmmaking.

PLUS, one of the storylines running throughout the film is set in Japan! It follows a day in the life of a deaf-mute girl living in Tokyo and is a really interesting insight into the youth culture of Japan although having never been to Japan I suppose I can't really comment on its accuracy, but its really enjoyable and is beautifully shot anyway.

Has anyone else seen it yet or is anyone intending to see it?

Lol thank you for replying out of sheer courtesy! And well observed as well...why does no one reply to me?! Its always so hard for me to join new forums, but everyone else seems to manage it.

Aah nevermind, I shall persevere and perhaps someone will watch Babel too.

a warning, this may contain spoilers~!

I just saw Bable the other day, and as a whole i liked it. I didn't think the stories related enough, the ties weren't very strong. Have you seen Crash? Those stories tied in well!

I loved the story about the Japanese girl, I've never been to Japan, so have no idea if that's what the teen culture is like. But I do want to eat at the 'Jpop'

Oh, and i think i missed the part when they explained what was on the note the Japanese girl wrote to the detective guy... or was it a note telling him that she was going to suicide?

I thought Chieko's was the most moving of all the storys. I also thought it was incredibly well acted, I'm pleased Rinko is up for a Golden Globe for it.

I haven't seen it yet, but I plan to. Alejandro González Iñárritu is a great director and his previous films were really good.

Babel was just nominated for 7 Oscars, including best picture.

Ah I am glad that some of you like it! I had no idea it was up for so many awards, it definitely deserves something! The acting and script truly were fantastic.

*possible spoilers*!!

Asphodel - The stories in Crash might have tied in better, but I didn't like the film anywhere near as much as Babel. It struck me as more contrived and less natural...probably something to do with the inclusion of major Hollywood actors and actresses. It also seemed a bit too obvious as a racial message.
However, I quite agree - the Jpop cafe looked great!
Oh and it wasn't revealed what the note said, that was open to our own interpretation although judging by the officer's reaction, it was probably some sort of goodbye.
