There is gore in one scene, but its not too bad.

As for an age group, I'd say teens, 14-18ish. But I'm 21 and I like it. It is character driven almost entirely, so I think it has a lot to offer people older than its main target. Also more of a girl show, but I'm a guy and I absolutely loved it. Bought the movie and the novel, never read the manga but I might someday.
