Question street music in tokyo? - 08-05-2008, 04:45 PM

hi, i live in new york and i am trying to understand some things about the street music and performance scene in tokyo. i have never been to tokyo, so i hope the forum can answer my questions.

here in new york, lots of musicians play in the subways and streets. they put out a hat or a jar or a bucket for tips, and if people passing by like what they hear, they will give the musician a tip. there are also people doing magic tricks or mime or other kinds of performance for money. in new york it is illegal to play music in the subway without a permit, but lots of people do it anyway...

does the same thing happen in tokyo? do people play music in the streets or subways? what kind of music do they play? do they do other types of performance, too? do people stop to listen and give them money? do performers get hassled by the police?

has anyone become famous who started playing in the streets?
has anyone on the forum ever tried playing music in public places?

thanks for helping with my questions!

Red face New to J-rock. - 08-05-2008, 05:48 PM

I'm not sure where to post this thread....

Alright, I'm new to J-rock and I'd like to learn more about it. I listen to some bands and I've actually adapted slowly into the dress style. But, I want to go deeper than that.

I just wanted to have someone to help me along, get to know the world and revolution of J-rock.

I probably should mention the few bands I know and listen to, huh...

Miyavi
Gackt
An Cafe
Girugamesh
Psycho le Cemu

I'm starting to listen to...
The GazettE
Nightmare
Ayabie

If anyone is willing to help me along, give me tips, links to stuff, their own knowledge, or just wants to talk...please reply to this or PM me. Thanks.

I'm new to Jrock, but I hope to learn more. Don't diss me because I'm ignorant.

Yea, people play on the streets in Japan. I don't know if you need a permit to do it, but it's a pretty popular site in big tourist spots or at large stations. I've seen people with hats on the streets waiting to be filled with coins... Some girl that I saw at Shinagawa Station in Tokyo actually brought her keyboard out and sang some really good music. She even sold her CD's (I'm pretty sure they were from an indie label) on the spot.

Yes, some famous musicians did start out by doing street performances... YUI, a popular female signer in Japan started out her now blossoming career by doing performances at Tenjin station in Fukuoka.

I think the only j-pop I really believe I like is Kimura Kaela, and Gackt. Sorry.

j-rck, ftw. (for the win)

Hello

The fingertips iced over, the feeling faded
told myself I'd be happy just to make a clean break

I remember feeling like I was going mad
going to sleep with the urge to destroy

Told myself I'd be happy to be completely rid of you
every last trace
a line of something unfamiliar running down my face

No matter how you try to escape,
you won't get what you desire

No matter how you scream,
that which is broken can never be put together again
