What's eveyone's experience competing in some manner in a Japanese martial art or any other context?

i've already grown too old ....
and taken too long of a break >.<

I study Aikido. Its not a competitive martial art. Why be competitive, why not train for the sake of training, to improve your health and/or have fun?

Nothing against those who go down the competitive route, but I've got friends who are competitive in other areas and I've found that its not fun to be involved with them at that time.
