PS3 region question

So i've been quite tempted to get a PS3 for a while now mainly for series like final fantasy and metal gear solid among others.
But i wanted to know, if i bought a English PS3 here in the UK would it be able to play Japanese games? Or rather, are PS3 games region encoded?

Sangetsu 01-17-2009 12:25 PM

The games I have seen are marked "Region 2", if that helps.

CrazyLee 01-17-2009 12:26 PM

I dont believe they are. I know that PSP games arent region specific, so I would think the same might hold true for the PSĀ£. THoughm since I dont have one I dont know for certain. Have you tried the Sony official site?

Lucas89 01-17-2009 01:03 PM

I can't believe i didn't go to the sony site, i don't seem to be thinking very well today.

This is what i found in their FAQ:

PLAYSTATION 3 software is not restricted by region. The majority of games purchased in another country will work on any PLAYSTATION 3 system. However, the decision to make games region specific is made by the publisher of each title and as a result, some games may not work on a PLAYSTATION 3 system purchased in a different country. Furthermore, there may be restrictions with the online features of these titles through PlayStation Network, such as the inability to download additional content from PlayStation Store (for PS3).

Please note that PlayStation one titles, PlayStation 2 titles, DVDs and Blu-ray movies will only play on a PLAYSTATION 3 system from the same region.

Well, I think that answers that then. Glad I could help.......even though I did nothing ;)

YES :)

PS3 is multi regional, so you can buy import Jap games and play them on a UK or US console.

You cannot however play a imported blu-ray movie as they are region restricted.

*facepalm*

BLu-Ray games AND movies are region coded, most people say they're not because the US and Japan, share the same region.

Region A: Asiatic Islands, Korea, and the Americas
Region B: Central Asia, Central Eurasia
Region C: Greenland, Europe, Africa, and Australia

there's a map about half-way down on the right..

Then explain why am I able to play an Import Japanese game on a UK console genius?.

It's only the Blu Ray movies that are region locked.

well didn't it say that games weren't region coded just ps1,ps2,dvd, and blue ray?

it said games would most likely work.

correct me if i'm wrong

The new ps3's aren't backwards compatible anyway.

I bought the first gen one, so it plays ps1 and ps2 games. The new ones don't.
