i plan to live in japan.im a nurse in america - 10-05-2008, 09:32 PM

I just started working as a nurse in America, and I plan to move to japan after maybe a 1 to 2 years worth of saving ranging to 20-30 thousand dollars. I graduated with a Bachelors in Science in Nursing degree in the Philippinese. I'm an single Filipino, american citizen and learning the japanese language. I plan to live in Tokyo at Chiyoda
My questions:
1. Do I have enough saved money until I find a job?
2. How much does a Nurse in Japan make?
3. Would living in Tokyo be a hassle for a single nurse to afford?
4. How much is a average apartment in tokyo? (ranges)

Much appreciated thank you

do you speak Japanese? You will have to be fluent (medical terms as well) to even approach a hospital about working as a nurse.

Japanese requirements for a nursing position are different than elsewhere. If you really want to work in a Japanese hospital - there are two paths you can take.
One is the path of an internship through a hospital you work at - I know the Red Cross hospitals do this, even providing translators in some cases. I do believe this is a short term thing though.

The other is to take the Japanese nursing exam and apply for a position. This will require you to know Japanese policies and speak Japanese well enough to read and write to the exam standards.

Just coming to Japan and job hunting without the proper qualifications is not going to get you anywhere.

If anyone is trying to find me… Tamyuun on Instagram is probably the easiest.

You could try to find an aged care center. Of course you should have good Japanese communicative skill.

Medical licenses generally do not translate over international lines. You will need to have your syllabi translated into Japanese. The classes you are missing you will probably have to take in Japanese if you want to be a practicing nurse.

But to despair was to wish back for something already lost.
Or to prolong what was already unbearable.

i only know a handful of nurses who worked here in Japan but can't speak Japanese, and majority worked in Kobe, Hyogo. The one's I know in Tokyo and Osaka were trained first in Japanese Language and must be able to pass JLPT Level 1 after 1 year of intensive language training. If they failed they can't get a license. The same goes with caregivers.

One of my other concern is the nursing standard. I don't know about America's standard for nurses, but for the local Canadian nurse (yes I am in Canada), the training and education will only suffice what they need to do locally, I know for a fact that Japanese nurses has to do a lot more than what our local nurse are trained to do...
