I don't know about you, but in America, college and university are the same thing.

College and university are often used interchangeably in US English, but university is still a step up from college. First off, I think you're skipping something here... you have to get a bachelor's degree before you can get a master's degree. Bachelor's takes four years, and a master's degree takes two or three years on top of that - those must be done at a university. You can start at a college for a bachelor's degree but you must transfer to a university later on to finish it.

As for your second question, that depends whether or not you're fluent in Japanese...

Yeah, four years AFTER receiving your bachelor's degree. There's no such thing as getting a master's degree without having first gotten a bachelor's degree.

From wikipedia:

An honours bachelor's degree is generally a prerequisite for admission into graduate studies in Canada.
PS, you don't need a master's degree to get a work visa. Only a bachelors. Good luck.

The US has more higher ranked schools than Japan. In fact they lead globally in university education. I do notice though that Japan has more universities that specialize in certain fields as opposed to like a state university that offers a broad array of degrees.
