Can I Make a Living in Japan?? - 05-12-2009, 03:13 AM

Hi guys
To the point..i'm currently teaching in Jakarta. Never been to Japan before. Have an idea (loose plan) of moving to a large Japanese city, renting a place to live comfortable enough for me & my wife which would also double as place to teach IELTS/TOEFL to private students.
1.My questions are.. How much should i expect to pay for appropriate accomodation? 2. Could i find students & make enough money to live reasonably comfortably? 3. Is this all just a crazy idea?

Your advice would be greatly appreciated.
Ghdtreb.

I am just trying to think how you would be able to get a visa if you are self-employed. I knew a couple guys doing something similar to this, but they were all married to Japanese citizens.

You'd have to apply for and obtain an investor/business manager visa to operate a business in Japan.

You can get more info on MOFA but I believe that part of the pre-requisite for that visa is to hire at least 2 Japanese full time workers.

Does Indonesia have a working holiday visa agreement with Japan? I was looking at the limitations of it as an Australian since I was thinking of continuing to freelance while in Japan, and it looks like self-employment at least is fine (for 6 months, with a possibility of the visa being renewed for another 6 months). I'm sure it would be more complicated if you were operating as a company rather than an individual though.

This sounds Way to difficult. I'm a Brit teaching in Jakarta. Guess it would be easier to do this in S.E Asia, where the rules of bureaucracy are made to be broken..literally.
Just fancied a change, thats all

It'd be far easier to JET your way in and have the wife join you on a Spouse visa. You don't get to choose where in Japan the programme sends you, though.
