We have a memorial garden for the interned Japanese at my college. There are currently two very young sakura trees there. The flowers bloomed about two weeks ago, and they were quite pink until sometime last week (spring break for me). Today when I looked, the flowers were totally white. Both trees are about my height (5'10") at present, and no thicker around than two of my fingers.

I'm kinda bumbed that I'll be transfering out of that school long before those two trees are big enough to offer a good show in the spring time .

I went to a hanami (flower viewing) party at Ueno park just after I arrived in Tokyo this year. The flowers were beautiful, there was music, dancing, and festival food. The blossoms fell like snow in the breeze, it was a wonderful experience.

This year I'll go to the local hanami festival. There is a large temple complex and lake near where I now live, and it is surrounded by cherry trees. It's much less crowded here in the country side, and I can walk to the temple instead of being crushed inside the yamanote train with all the other party goers.
