How common is it to see people as tall as me?

Hi, I am 6'2 guy 18 years old and weight 155lbs.

are there other japanese people as tall as me? are they common? am I going to be a giant when I go there?

JohnBraden 11-12-2010 10:01 PM

You'll be able to see over most people, but you won't be considered a giant. Japanese now aren't like the those a generation or two ago. They are getting taller.

really? is there any specific reason why they are getting taller?

A dramatic change in the diet since the end of WWII, namely protein.

Yeah, a lot of the "grandparent" age people are like 4 foot nothing:mtongue: , but as I walk through crowds of businessmen during my morning commute I'd say the average guy is AT LEAST my height (5'8"-5'9"), and a lot guys who are taller than that.
As JohnBraden said, you'll probably be able to see over most people but you're not going to be some kind of giant.

As someone of a similar height (6'1") who has been to japan, I can echo the sentiment that you will definitely be taller than most people, but you won't feel like a giant or anything. That being said, I also know plenty of people in my home who are in the 5'3" to 5'10" range. If you live an area that's taller than average, you might notice the difference a bit more. That being said, the only people I saw who were really as tall as me were some pro athletes.

im 6.3 and in my group is 1.62m tall girl. she went to japan and said she was an average height. and i don't feel like giant next to her.
+ diet in Japan has changed and there is a lot more meet than there used to be so people are getting bigger.
for sure tall. but not like Mike Myers giant kind.
+ today we were joined by a japanese girl at lunch who is in an exchange for russian language here and she was taller than her. like an average girl.

I agree with this also. I am 5'9 and a good chunk of the dudes my age or younger are my height or taller. It is just the older generation and girls that I tend to tower over, but still there are quite a few J-girls even that got me beat.

It is kind of funny that Japanese people who am taller than look at me and say I am tall (but they are just thinking foreigner = tall, when in reality I am not that tall at all comparatively anymore).

Compared to women, I am tall, but if I were a guy, probably not so much. I'm about 5'9 or 5'10, and I do tower the women. I work in a junior high school, and a good amount (imo) of the boys there are close to my height, my height, or on the verge of being slightly taller since they're still kids and probably still growing. So, with your height, I don't think it'd be any kind of a problem.
