Different parts of the Kanto area, Pros, cons - 05-03-2011, 01:37 PM

So I'm moving to Tokyo in August and I'm being given a choice of a number of different areas and I was wondering if anyone could tell me anything (or if they've lived there, what's it like) about any of the following areas:

Omiya (inc. Shiki, Omiya, Hatsuda, Ageo, Koga, Kumagaya ana Kawagoe)

Tamagawa (inc. Hachioji, Musashikasai, Shimokitazawa, Machida, Sagami Ono and Yamato)

Sagami (inc. Atsuji, Fujisawa, Tsujido, Odawara, Atami)

Joban (inc. Noda, Troide, Matsudo, Ichikawa)

I intend to look them all up myself online, but any personal views, opinions and experiences would be really useful.

Parts of Tokyo?

Only Tamagawa from that list is in Tokyo.

Tokyo-area, not really Tokyo-city. They seem pretty darn generous on what they count as Tokyo city seeing as it goes down as far as Yokohama, but I'm guessing if they called it something else people might get confused.

I wouldn't be working in the centre; if it's only within day-tripping distance, that's fine by me.

I suppose the most important point is where you are going to be spending you days. I would want to be as close to work/school as possible, as 90 minute+ commutes are not considered abnormal, but I wouldn't want to do that twice a day.

I'll be living and working in the same area, wherever I pick, so it's not so much finding a place that fits my work as finding a place I'll like being in.

Hachioji :College town & mountain. The station surrounding prospers somewhat.
Musashikasai? musashisakai?: There is only a residential section.
Shimokitazawa: A little fashionable town.It is near Shinjuku & sibuya.
Machida: Remove the school from Hachioji.
Sagami Ono and Yamato: There is only a residential section.
Atsuji: Hachioji
Fujisawa, Tsujido: The sea is near. It is near the ancient city(kamakura).
Odawara: The sea is near. something thrown in hakone
Atami: The sea is near. There is only a hot spring.
Noda, Troide, Matsudo, Ichikawa: Dismissal.

Thank you so much! That really helps. I've been looking at them on google maps, but it's hard to see what's just residential and what's actually got something.

You should remove Joban from the alternative.
If the center of a city is good, it is Shimo-Kitazawa. Provided that, the house rent is high.

Is there a detailed question?
I am born and grow up in the Tamagawa area, and am living the Sagami area now.
