Living Cost (Small Apartment)

Hi JF peoples,
Just wondering if anyone knows the range of costs to live in one of those one room apartments in a city (e.g. Tokyo/Nagoya/Osaka). All it is is one bedroom/livingroom with a another room for the bathroom.

The cheapest way for a foreigner to live in Tokyo is probably to rent one of those guest houses or shared rooms from a company like Sakura House. The prices on those goes down below 40,000 yen a month for the very cheapest ones, but budgeting 50,000-75,000 yen a month for renting a cheap place might be better if you can afford it. You can take a look at the Sakura House website for their prices.

Exactly what I was looking for, arigatou :)

Do you have any experience with this kind of accomodation or just small accomodation in general. Is it so bad??

I am sure there must be some people here on the forum who have stayed at Sakura House, because it's pretty popular with foreigners just starting out in Tokyo. Maybe someone will post their experience to help you out! :)

I don`t like the whole foreigner house thing, so I won`t even comment on Sakura house...

The prices are going to vary a lot based on where you are. Tokyo>Osaka>Nagoya in general. In Nagoya you can get a decent apartment for less than 50,000 a month. You can get a furnished one with all utilities included for around 65,000 a month.

Yeah, judging all Japan by Tokyo prices is like judging all of America by prices in SF and NY City.

If you don't live in a gaijin house remember to calculate key money, insurence, agency fees etc etc etc etc.

About 4 months rent on a very conservative estimate. So 50,000 yen apartment have 200,000yen plus to spare.

Or just go through somewhere like Leopalace that only charges a half month`s rent as a deposit.

You really don`t need all that much to rent a place these days.
