do I need to go to collage in order to work in japan? - 10-27-2007, 02:47 PM

How can I live and work in Japan with out any collage experience. I know most companies require you to have a bachelors degree. But I don't want to spend 4 years and shit load of money and BS just to get a nice piece of paper. Are there any loop wholes? Would I have a better chance If I mastered the Japanese language?

short answer : no

long answer: having a collage degree is actually a visa requirement, so without one you cannot do the english teaching route. some how mastering the japanese language will not change a thing in that regard.

other things you can do

a) If you are from a country that has an agreement you can do a working holiday visa. this restricts you to part time work for 1 year or so.

b) marry a japanese national. no restrictions on work then

c) student visa at a language school. but that's not really a long term soloution and you're restricted to part time work anyway.

that's all I can think of. So yeah that collage BS makes things alot easier.

You don't necessarily need a degree to get a job in Japan. To be able to legally work in Japan, you need a work visa. Having a degree makes getting a work visa much easier.

I know some countries will take workers that work public services like train/tram/bus driver... and I know that some places are after skilled manual workers, like electricians/plumbers/fitters. I don't know whether this applies to Japan though... the internet should give you loads of information if you research.

I would like to go to japan and maybe work there but that's not that impotent right now I think . I should be focusing on trying to enjoy life here. i just want to leave the county because I cant seam to fit in with the culture. i do think if I find my soul mate nothing will mater because life would be an adventure.

Well, making lots of collages will get you into Japan if you are really good at art, but it is not a requirement. As for your problem with being impotent, I would ask my doctor for Viagra.

Seriously though, a college diploma is more than a "piece of paper." It demonstrates your ability to work hard and commit to improving yourself through higher learning. As for the cost, do a search of the lifetime average earnings for high school versus college grads. The difference between the two is substantial enough to justify the cost of university.

When I was applying for colleges, I thought about maybe trying to shoot for a job in Japan. I was talking to an advisor and he said that most colleges can get you a job oversees if you play your cards right (academics, what your majoring & minoring in, etc.). That "piece of paper" can almost be like a gateway from my understanding. I asked him if I did decide to do that (get a job in Japan), would I have to learn the language? Surprisingly he said that I wouldn't have to (He actually flat out said no). The reasoning behind it I don't know and how legitimate this info is, but the college this advisor was at said they had ties to another college over in Japan so I myself think he knew at least to some degree what he was talking about.
