The class doesn't have to be a Japanese language class.
If you are interested, ask your teachers if she/he thinks it's a good idea to exchange letters with people overseas.

My class used to exchange letters with an Elementary school in the USA.They didn't have a Japanese class, but they wanted to do it to learn about Japan.We exchanged the map and local newspaper and some junkmails(I mean the supermarket advertisement or things like that we can see the pictures and their prices, what do you call that? I forgot the name...)

I believe they're called "supermarket flyers" or just "flyers".
