Don't make fun of his mistakes. That is why I didn't learn much Japanese when I was in Japan. Our Japanese coworkers really made fun of us (in not a nice way) to where we were embarrassed to try anymore. The best way to learn a language is to not be embarrassed to try speaking it mistakes and all.
