japanese monk statue - 01-14-2010, 09:00 AM

Hello all, i’m looking for some help about a statue of a japanese monk, which is in my family for at least more than 100 years ; I would appreciate any information… Thank you.

Description:
monk seated in meditation
Wood japanese hollow statue

Height: 90 cm
Width: 100 cm
Depth: 70 cm

Wood
Both single pieces hollow head and body –
Black encrusted eyes on little whites
Lacquered (amber) colored head
carved on the back with inscritions
Mala of 108 b.

Body containing a hundred mantras ( parchments with black and
gold ink-brushed mantras. 10 cm X 5 cm.)

It doesn't exactly look like A buddha, though it IS Buddhist. It's gorgeous anyway! Thanks for sharing.
