If this is any help...a friend of mine, he is half-japanese half-american. he's 15 now, but, in any case, he speaks flawless english and japanese, only because his mother (who i am also friends with) spoke mainly english to him growing up, and his father spoke japanese to him. He's happy they did that, so he knows both, without the effort required of the other students who must learn it at school. However, he believes it's really a pretty useless techinique for him right now, but he says ultimately it might have a very positive effect on him in the future (since he wishes to travel) and he believe english is prevalent in most places, so he could get by easily enough. His mother, though, never pushed culture and traditons on him after he was old enough to make choices on his own. I don't know if that helps any...
