Writing paper for school...need some help please - 11-15-2007, 08:02 PM

I am a college student (gone back to school after many many years of being out of school!!) and I have an essay to write on parenting in different cultures. I have chosen the Japanese culture as one I would like to research. Is there anyone out there who wouldn't mind answering some questions for me? If you would like to help, please contact me...thank you!!

I can't be much help but I think you should watch Babel (the movie) and compare the relation the Japanese girl has with her dad. I found it pretty shocking how lonely she felt and what an important role her dad played in her life, cause he (and the fact she didn't have a mother to call her own) was -in my opinion- the main reason that led her to depression. So from it I'd conclude that in the Japanese society, teenagers are more dependent on their parents than in many other cultures, or maybe not, but that's for you to investigate

I think coming to that conclusion just based on Babel is a little bit of a stretch. That relationship in that movie, in particular, is the most atypical Japanese relationship ever seen on film.

Check out "Family Game" for a slightly more realistic, if not cynical, family dynamic explored.

I think Japanese children are very independent. I would not say teenagers in Japan are more dependant than in the US. Traditionally they live at home longer, but that's a social tradition and not because they are too afraid to live on their own.
