I suppose this goes off topic but where are the "older people" It seems most of the threads are occupied by minors?

It's hard to find a thread or series of threads that include only those 19 and over. There's a few started, and a few that make up the thread, but generally, the minors are everwhere.

Moral: Learn to skim a thread.

no its not rude, and no ppl cant post everything under the sun, if that was allowed JF would have crashed and burned into the probevial(sp?) shit hole its slowly going to, although the mods have been doing a good job so that may not happen unless they pull another disapearance >_>

shojogirl 01-29-2009 02:09 AM

The reason I so rarely post unless I feel my postings will actually reach some individuals I cannot reach through other forums (mostly gaijinpot) is because this forum does not, in my opinion, have stringent enough rules, and as previously stated, does not have enough admin/mod control.

Before we blame everything on new individuals, or even minors in general, we should look at some of the rather painful choices that are regularly made. Colored text, overly large text, horrid grammar (in either language!), ridiculously sized banners, repetitive and immature topics... The list could go longer.

This forum seems to me to be less about Japan, and more about Japanese-influenced culture of western youth. Which frankly, given a name like JapanForum, I think is false advertising. It should probably be called.. er... well, something else. J-influenceForum.com maybe! When I initially signed up it was because I was preparing to make a move to Japan and wanted some last minute questions answered. There were individuals who definitely provided some good answers, but they were by far the extreme minority. I thank the JET alums and do not really include them in my general opinion of these forums. I hope they realise this.

I have just re-contracted for my second year here with little plan to leave. I think I could be a genuine resource to those who really, honestly wish to move to Japan and have a plan to do so. Yet I have found it hard to deal with individuals who I move to help who turn out to be far too young to have any realistic plans or goals that include moving to Japan.

Then there are outright ridiculous threads which are comprised mostly of minors that just drive me absolutely mad. A large reason I am a lurker as opposed to a poster can be traced to the adoption thread that took place roughly a year ago. Perhaps because when I was a teenager we had compuserv and prodigy and usenet only is why I have such a hard time dealing with the notion that the individuals I speak to online could really be so childish- because they're really children, and the idea of children on the internet is still something I can't quite wrap my head around.

Seems like someone needs to stand up and start acting like an adult around here, and it just doesn't seem like enough people, regardless of actual age, are willing to do that.
