Introduce 'waiting period' before posting?

In light of recent events, have the mods/site admin considered introducing a two or three day 'waiting period' before new members can post in the Forum? This rule is enforced in discussion forums at various other sites (e.g. at fanfiction.net) as a means to prevent spamming incidents, among other things, and seems to work fairly well. Just a suggestion. :)

That is a fairly good idea. It is something to consider, and present to the Head Admin. But us mods cannot make such a change. But thanx for coming up with that idea! ^_^

Waiting period? Will there be a test or something..?

You're welcome!

My personal suggestion would be to moderate the first so many posts from a new member - and then decide whether they should be given posting privileges. With a waiting period, someone could sign up, wait a week, and then spam the crap out of the board. I`ve seen it happen quite a lot on other boards.
It`s much less likely that a spammer will come up with 10 normal posts prior to spamming.

That's also an idea. :) The only problem is how to define "normal". A person could create their account, quickly post ten "normal" one-liners in threads such as "Current Mood" or "What are you currently listening to", then spam the Forum.

Unless the system's kept a secret ;)

annelie82 03-20-2007 06:08 PM

:) How do you mean "secret"?

CoolNard 03-20-2007 06:13 PM

Secret, as in not revealing how many first posts by each newcomer will be moderated, so as to enable mods to catch rule-breakers off-guard... :mtongue: They won't know what hit them... XD

In theory, it's a good idea. :) In practice, however, it would mean a lot of work for the mods (unless more mods were recruited, of course). Apart from keeping an eye on Forum activity in general, they would also have to carefully monitor posts by individual users for who knows how long. But hey, let's see what the mods themselves say about this. If they're up for the task, then why not? :)
