Apart from the "free" MMO's, some of which are half-decent (Project Torque was one of my favourites a couple of years ago), there are several noteworthy open source games - Nexuiz and Warsow, as well as free FPSs such as Quake Live, Alliance of Valiant Arms and Combat Arms. Just some games from the top of my head.
