I saw trailers for the new animated Star Wars movie. I grew up with the originals and couldn't believe Lucas animated the new one. But then I thought about it. Do you believe he's just tapping into the recent popularity of anime to gain a whole new audience of fans? Maybe he'll keep the young fans, gain the anime fans and doesn't need the old generation of fans?

Lucas isn't considering anime or anime fans at all, he is just trying to regurgitate past successes by doing a feature length CG movie: it isn't even close to anime.

As I think about it, the only difference between this feature and the last three is he doesn't have any human actors in front of a green screen this time. Lucas is not capable of the depth required from most true anime anyway; sure he's great with flashy effects but he can't tell a story or develop characters worth a damn. (sorry all you hardcore Star Wars fans out there but--and I did enjoy the movies--all the Star Wars films were shallow archetypal fairy tales with limited depth and character development)

They say he hates actors. And of cours they're fairy tales. But that's why we loved them. I saw the original in the theater when I was six. At that time, there wasn't really anyone truly tapping into the archtypes of the human mind that make-up folklore for movies. folk-lore is also almost dead in the modern world. He gave us a myth that reverberated with the people who needed one.

Lucas cannot make an anime movie as he isn't making his movies in Japan using Japanese artists.

So, anime is something that comes only from Japan? Other places animated movie are not considered anime? (no sarcasm intended.)

I for one didn't like it... The animation was mediocre at best, and the story was rather... lacking...

Correct. I would not call The Clones Wars anime.

I wouldn't call the Clone Wars anime either. However I disagree with your definition. In my opinion, the term anime denotes a style rather than the Japanese origin. For example I'd term "Avatar: The Legend of Aang" as anime as well as "Skyland" even though one's American and the other French (I think)

Edit- Just checked on Wiki.... Skyland is French

I would call Avatar "anime-influenced animation". Anime is cartoons from Japan.

I see... your definition seems to be the one most accepted. I'm not sure why it matters that the animators and writers are from Japan though. Surely style is more important when defining genres no?

In fact the Japanese themselves don't make the distinction according to your Wiki source.
