Don't they use a lot of slang and "unofficial" literature in Animate and Manga?

You can probably learn some basic stuff off it, but I wouldn't use everything from Animate and Manga if you want to speak "properly"

Yes, the same way an infant learns its native language solely by hearing others speak it, Manga and Anima play an important role in those who wish to learn Japanese.

Hmm...I'd have to disagree with you. The Japanese that is used in Manga and Anime is actualy the most commonly spoken. It's the "casual" type of Japanese. Because you wouldn't go around talking to people like they're the president =PP

That will be like trying to run before you can walk. Slang is based on proper Japanese, not just random words. If you don't learn the basics, the only thing you will learn from anime is set phrases. You won't be able to think for yourself or express anything original in Japanese.

I'm aware of that but if you are trying to learn "proper" japanese you should also take online japanese lessons and use anime as an source so it can help you how to pronounce japanese words properly honestly atashi wa baka ja nai ^;^

So you're telling me that you should learn to speak a language extremely politely before learning how to speak it normally or casually? Not to mention, speaking "polite" Japanese takes lots more elongated pronunciation, longer words, more rules, and more exceptions.

It's much easier to speak casual Japanese than it is to speak polite Japanese.
