Ok, I have a good story to share.....
When my oldest son started school he had a very hard time learning to read. We had him in extra help programs but nothing was working. One night I was fretting about it and I thought ok maybe if he had something he was more interested in to read it would help. He was totally into Yugioh at the time so I went to the store and bought a Shonen Jump. He loved it. I had to help him with alot of the words but he wanted to read it over and over again. I got a subscription and we read it together all of the time. By the end of that year he was the only one in his class able to read the word anihilate. His teachers asked me what I was doing with him at home to see such a huge improvement. I told them and now the literacy program actually recommends Shonen Jump to some of the students. I know it's manga and not anime but you get my point. Some people have to have things proven to them first.

 No, you aren't, Kitski!! You're an intelligent teenager who's currently blossoming beautifully into an amazing lady(i saw your photo :p)
Now I have a score to settle with the person who told u that..
I'm sure if you ask anyone in this forum, no one would say you're what you just described yourself to be. Only people who admit their loss and wallow in self-pity are truly all that. But whenever I see your posts, I can feel the mature firmness and blistering courage within your words. Don't put urself down, Kitski. Know that the people in JF will always be willing to lend you a shoulder for support whenever you're in pain.. or at least, I know i will ^_^

fuu: one of the best real life experiences i've ever hear, we're gonna be needing mor, lol XD
reading manga has just been officially proven effective :D

I think you have to differentiate between what people say out loud and what they really think when it comes to anime and manga. To be honest I think a lot of people say they dislike it just to "fit in", when secretly they quite enjoy it. It's the public stigma they want to steer clear of, not anime/manga itself.

Back in high school I was part of the so-called "popular crowd" and we used to make fun of the geeks in our class who wore star trek t-shirts and read spiderman magazines and stuff (very bad of me, I know :( ). Then I started dating a guy with all kinds of nerdy interests and my opinion of what it meant to be a geek immediately changed. He was one of the most open-minded and intellectual people I've ever met (and good-looking too!!) and I've had a thing for nerdy guys ever since. :)

I've been wanting to say the same thing for some time now, i don't know what was stopping me, lol.. XD
It's such a shame.. if everyone would just admit their personal secrets, the world would be a much happier place to live in. Pity it goes against human nature though..
It takes true bravery to fight righteously for what you believe in.

There's no arguing the truth of that point. I wouldn't be too gloomy about the whole marginalisation of anime/manga, though. Considering that Western interest in Japanese/Asian culture and language is undeniably increasing, I'm quite positive that anime/manga will one day be accepted as a mainstream form of leisure. Perhaps we should enjoy this underestimated leisure activity as much as we can before future overexposure in Western media dulls and dilutes its appeal?

Yes.., indeed, we should.. You, my lady, have a knack for taking words outta other people's mouths, lol.. :D but I'm not entirely sure about the whole Western intervention thing.., maybe it is us, Asians who will deal a drastic influence in Western culture? XD~!
