AKIRA... 'Nuf said...

I've just finished the fourth comic and about to read the fifth and totally hooked!!
I watched the cartoon before reading the comics and was blown away by the movie, I had no idea the comics were going to expand so much on the story, I mean it goes way past all the stuff that happen in the film. I LOVE IT!!
What are your opinions on both the film and comics? Where would be a good place to go from Akira?

AzulieAngel 01-30-2010 01:17 AM

need to know

Why don't you tell us what it is about?
I have never heard of Akira and if it interest's me then i might consider learning more about it!

Uhm nutshell from the movie. Someone else is more than free to pick up the slack.

The japanese government did research into a god gene and eventually made a breakthrough when splicing it into humans, however this caused a catastrophy to occur and wiped out a large portion of Tokyo. The story takes place in the future, or "neo tokyo".

One of the test subjects breaks free and gets into an accident with the younger brother of a member of a bike gang. Their genes fuse for one reason or another and he begins to develop powers such as flight, telekinetic abilities, and super strength.

Eventually the power takes control of oh him and he destroys himself, and almost takes down neo tokyo with him. It's a bit of a stand off at the end and blah blah blah emotion.

ANYWAY

I haven't read the comics and have little interest in doing so. I own the DVD of the original 1988 anime film. I don't find the story that interesting, the only reason I own the DVD is because I fell in love with the animation detail. The entire thing has been rendered by hand; frame by frame.

Unless there is going to be another movie that has been hand rendered, or in the very least computer rendered to emulate the style of hand single frame rendering, then I feel the story should live as history and not present.

the movie was pretty interesting...

Thank you that sounds interesting.
I'll try to see if I can find it so I can watch it.

I really liked the manga so I bought the movie, and I didn't like it. The beginning was good and such but they changed so many things near the end that it (in my opinion) sucked.

read the manga cuz it's really good ;)

I've finished reading the books now, can anyone recommend a good/great series to check out now?
P.S. The Akira books were amazing!!!!!

Somebody needs to lower their font size when posting.

And why should she do that?

Takes up too much of the screen for so little information. It's unnecessary.

It's fine as it is.

I don't really care myself, but I can understand why it would annoy quite a few people.

Yeah, it would probably annoy some people. But oh well, since it ain't on the "forum rules", its fine.

I wonder a wall-of-text with this letter size.

Tyrien 02-01-2010 01:03 AM

Ironically purposefully posting with large font while knowing it annoys others is against the rules.

And going off-topic like we are doing, isn't it? :rheart:

Tyrien 02-01-2010 01:18 AM

That's true! A moderator should probably delete posts 8 through 16.

AzulieAngel 02-01-2010 02:21 AM

Want to know more about Akira

I'm sorry if the size of my post was annoying you but I even message using the same size to my friends.
BTW you guys are getting off topic.
Please don't get off topic when you could always just message each other if you want to argue with each other. If you want to argue find something you disagree about of Akira!

:X we kinda solved it already so there was no need to post this.

I wish the movie had a little bit more depth to it. After watching it a second time it seems rather shallow. Beautifully rendered but... lacking story.

I'd like to buy the blu-ray but it's over $30 :/

Yeah, i just sent him a love letter via-PM.

I didn't really like Akira. Its uninvolving for me.

nobora 02-04-2010 04:05 AM

See post number 3.

FiNGSandMan 02-08-2010 08:09 PM

seen the movie not as great as everyone made it out to be, maybe i didn't get it. i watched it 2 times a year apart. still did't get why everyone loved it so much. MAYBE because what post 3 said, its animation is good. seemed alright to me, explosions and such, good story up until everytime the super powered kid came into the movie. and the freaky little children.

not one of those movies you'd watch over and over again.

Twisted 02-08-2010 11:22 PM

Akira is considered a masterpiece by many. It has a great story, lots of morale and animation that was way ahead of its time in quality back then. The only one who could pull that off as well was Miyazaki (Ghibli).

And the font thing is annoying. Don't want to brag, but I'm doing this on my 32" LCD TV as a monitor... And that post was taking up my whole screen... So if either you or your friends aren't so near-sighted you'd be considered blind... Stop doing that...
