It's not, Anime is Anime, if it's a cartoon, why is it called Anime?
Cartoon can also mean comical drawn pictures, do you call Manga cartoons?

terra104 05-17-2007 10:05 PM

well if i watch the 1st couple of episodes as dub, then i watch the whole thing as dub..
but if i start watching a subd anime that i cnt watch it dubbed!

YennonCrow 05-18-2007 04:34 AM

anime is a type of cartoon. 3D animation is a type of cartoon.

why do so many try to cover up the fact that they indeed watch cartoons? Makes me think they're ashamed of it  theres nothing wrong with it at all. My mom is obsessed with Looney Toons, and I had a teacher who was obsessed with Disney.

And of course manga isnt a cartoon. Where were you going with that one? never mind. I'd rather not know.

But that was straying off the topic of this thread. I believe we've all said what we thought of dubbed and subbed anime, so we can hush now, and let the thread die :mtongue: unless someone wants to share their opinion on subbed and dubbed anime.

This isn't a debate on whether or not anime is cartoons or not. I apologize that I too forgot that.

I agree the sub is better, plus I like yo hear the japanese language

NanteNa 05-21-2007 03:47 PM

SUB!

Hate Germany for putting on new voices all the time. >__<

Yamamato 05-21-2007 03:49 PM

But can the voiceover's in Germany at least put emotion into theirs? in the USA its horrible, the voices don't even remotely match and they can't put any emotion into their voices.

NanteNa 05-21-2007 04:09 PM

No they don't. And it sounds totally fucked up.

Every single serie, cartoon or whatever should be viewed in the original language. Only with subtitles. Nothing more.

deadthinker 05-21-2007 04:16 PM

hmmmm...i think this one is difficult....some i prefer to be dubbed becuase there is so much going on if you are readign you miss whats happening

but most i prefer to be subbed english/american voice overs always sound stupid and i want to watch it as it was meant to be watched

either way translation gets in the way and yu can sometimes get confussed which is why i learn japanese so i dont have to do either but for the meantime i guess it depends on what anime i am watching ^^

cattiemae 06-08-2007 05:38 AM

Definitely agree with you. I, too, hate watching dubs and it irks me (pisses the crap out of me actually) the way the v-a's pronounce the names. LOL like Sa-Soo-Kay for Sasuke.

But yeah, like Kira says, it's how much you like it, not how you watch it. If dub is your way, that makes you no less an anime fan than watching subs<3.

I watch both subtitled animes and dubed but the only problem I have with subs are that I can't read them fast enough somthimes, and with dubed it's kinnda weird when or if there lips move completly unlike their words:rolleyes:

onigiribou 06-10-2007 04:10 AM

I prefer subtitles but I don't think that whether you like subbed or dubbed determines how big of an anime fan you are.

jass15 06-10-2007 04:42 AM

First af all, YennonCrow I LOVE the image that you have of Kyo and Tohru!!!! I LOVE FRUITS BASKET!!!

And well...I prefer the subbed versions...I hate the voices in the dubbed versions  ....but anyway...anyone is allow to have different preferences :) ...and yeah I don't think that either of those determine how big fan you are....:) ...:ywave:

gn1225 06-10-2007 04:44 AM

idont think that it matters as long as you always watch the anime and enjoy it

i like subtitles better-even if sometimes theyr spelt wrong lol^^

YennonCrow 06-11-2007 08:51 AM

Poll added.

AoshiShinomori 06-11-2007 09:15 AM

Well I support the subtitled version as well. I think it makes you a better fan because of the simple fact that there are more episodes out there in subtitles than in the english dub which automatically means you get to know more info watching the subtitling version ^_^. Also subtitling allows you to know the names of moves, characters and items as they are in Japanese as opposed to and English transalation. From what I heard from a friend of mine, Kisuke Urahara in Bleach is always called Mr.Hat and Clogs in the English Dub. I don't know if this is true coz I haven't seen the dubs but I thought it was way cooler to know the real name than the transalation ^_^

Kanji_The_Wanderer 06-11-2007 01:30 PM

Well I pretty much agree with you there Shino-kun, but all I have to say is that it is a matter of preference. Some anime I just enjoy better in English. One example is Dragon Ball Z. I think it sucks in Japanese, but it has awesome English voices. Some animes are like that, but I think that the majority is better in Japanese. It just sounds better, and it completes the experience, since they are generally better voice actors.

YennonCrow 06-11-2007 05:00 PM

it bugs me that some people think that the Japanese have 'magical' voices that when they speak it 'magically' fits the person's mouth movements on the screen.

The english voice actors try really hard to match their voices and make people happy. They try over and over until its perfect. And the Japanese do the same. My favorite voice actor ever (Crispin Freeman) prefers subtitles over dubbed :P rock on, buddy :rheart:

I have been watching Scrapped Princess in subtitles, and I keep noticing that Zefires's lips keep moving when the voice stops talking. THAT is so annoying ~.~ but i've never seen it happen anywhere else. Then again, I don't watch every anime I can get my hands on. I hate poorly animated anime. Ones with low ratings, and no ones ever heard of it.

I really like some subtitles compared to the dubs. Like Love Hina. The english cast was so awful, I nearly cried. Then again, I personally think the anime itself was so awful I nearly cried  READ THE MANGA!!!

So. If anyone wants to think I'm a lesser anime fan go right ahead. At least I read the manga :mtongue: or does someone want to tell me I'm a lesser fan because I cant read it RAW?

AkaiNeko 06-11-2007 05:34 PM

subs always but english voice never again!

QueenNanami 06-12-2007 04:21 PM

I dont think it makes you less of a fan. I mean why would it? Sure you can watch the anime not dubbed but if you dont pay attention you wont know what happened. I have the attention span of 4 year old. tho i have seen animes undubbed i have to rewind it n re watch it because i saw something shiny n had to mess with it. So i like to watched dubbed anime i dont care what y'all think. It's all gonna be the same in the end no matter the version. So claiming your a better anime fan just because u watch it in it's "Original form" is kinda lame. I know this might sound rude but if your claiming your a better anime fan because of this you really need a life.

kitski 06-12-2007 07:14 PM

i only watch the subbed ones.then i can learn japanese.in addition in dubbed versions(no hard feelings those whose native language is english)..they pronounce the names wrong. it bothers me.:o

YennonCrow 06-12-2007 08:13 PM

There's nothing at all wrong with likeing subtitles. What I've been trying to say is thinking that you're a bigger and better anime fan because you watch subtiltes is mean, and anyone who thinks they are so much better is full of themselves. I agree with my sister (QueenNanami), if you think this way, you really do need a life. Anime is NOT everything. And the Japanese arent going to praise you when you show up in Japan eating ramen and screaming 'BAKA!' at your friends, wearing your anime get-up. They're all going to freaking laugh at you ~.~; Enjoying anime and manga is great. Believing your some kind of anime god/dess while living in your moms basement, dreaming of living in Japan? Lame. End of story.

Kazumi 06-13-2007 12:03 AM

I really pefer the subitiles more because I like watching anime in the original japanese version. I really dislike the dubbed version but there is a few anime I watch in the english, like pokemon because it's kinda hard to find the japanese version.

Maku 06-13-2007 12:25 AM

People have different preferences, and either way they're still watching it so it doesn't matter.
Opinion expressed.

limegreen 06-13-2007 02:56 AM

subs are way better. if ur watching dubbed anime, ur not getting the full experince of the anime, ur getting the extremly censored, tottaly new lines, and, of course, americanized (usually) version. some dubs are ok, but most are tottal shit

CrimsonNataku 06-13-2007 04:21 AM

Your decision to watch an anime in its dubbed form or subtitled form makes no difference when it comes to who is a "truer" anime fan. Personally, I think so long as you aren't so biased that you aren't open to trying to watch an anime in dubbed/subtitled form, then it doesn't matter.

There are good dubs, and there are bad ones. By the same token, there are good and bad subs too. I have seen TERRIBLE translation jobs. Some of them were fansubs, but others weren't. In fact, there was one anime where, when compared line by line, the DUB was closer to the truth than the subtitles.

Example
Dialogue spoken: Kuso!
Subtitle: No!
Dub: Damn!

It's all a matter of opinion and personal preference.

YennonCrow 06-13-2007 04:25 AM

The ones that are severly changed are the crappy childrens ones. The ones that don't air on public tv or CN's Toonami are completly changed and americanized. But still, even if you do watch that, you can get the full experince if you read the manga. Sometimes even subtitled animes have been completly changed and turned to crap. But stories are essentually the same. You can't take the plot of a story away.

YennonCrow 06-13-2007 04:29 AM

CrimsonNataku - ah ha! Very good point :P I too have seen really bad subtitles. I have Chobits on DVD its comepletely in Japanese ~.~ even the menu. And theres this part was Sumomo tries to say, "I'm in Public mode." but the translators put, "I'm in Pubic mode." which had me and my sister rolling around laughing our asses off for quite some time.

Kazumi 06-13-2007 04:50 AM

To me it doesn't really matter if the subtitles are bad or not. I understand if it doesn't matter if you watch the subbed or dubbed version but I still would pefer subtitles because sometimes in the dubbed version the character have these kinda corny dialog, or something like that. But anyways still it doesn't matter because I say the best channel to watch the dubbed version of anime is on Cartoon Network or on any other channels with anime. On Cartoon Netork they brought back Dragonball Z and this time it was uncut.

VanTango 06-13-2007 09:55 AM

i think it doesnt matter whether it is a sub or a dub, it is whether the essence of the anime is kept.
Studio Ghibli dubs are so good after watching any of their movies i can't remember what language it was in.
I do prefer subs though and if i have a choice i will always watch subs because dubs lose soooooooo much of the japanese culture and references to other japanese popular culture.
Naruto does NOT say "believe it"
that is the lamest catchphrase ever. and the dubbed voice is way too annoying.
bad dubs is why mainstream pop culture sees anime as just kids shows because the american versions of many good animes are just that. dumbed down for kids. its sad.

if u alwsays watch dubs though u dont know what you're missing out on

narutoluvr 06-13-2007 12:56 PM

i watch subbed but my reason is weird i think the voices sound better and all and the english seem to me they leave out some blood

Well I won't say your way is wrong because we all have our own way of thinking but when you hear the characters talk in the english you know that's not their real voice. I use to think the same way when I watch DBZ but I realize the japanese voice are better because that's how they really sound. Also it fits their character but don't get me wrong some english version the character have good voice that match their character. Another thing is have you heard anime in another language like spanish or german. But still I undersstand what your saying and I don't disagree with you.
