nope the link doesn't work ::sigh::
it seems most video and book store carry only the most popular and most publicized manga and anime. but there are so many good ones out there anymore, i don't understand why they don't carry more. most of the time, i have to go off recommendations or just what i stuble acroos while searching the net. |
Amazon.com: Reviews for Manga: The Complete Guide: Books: Jason Thompson
The cover makes it look like it's going to focus on the really popular manga such as the 'Shonen Jump' titles... which kind of puts me off it. But the review above says it focusses on all different types so could be interesting. The manga books I really do like are those written by Frederik L. Schodt. I'd recommend "Dreamland Japan" to anyone interested in learning more about Manga. |

I have heard dreamland Japan. Its somthing that I have often considerd buying. What authors and works dose it mention? I liked Manga: Masters of the art. The author interveiws underground manga artists (including Suehiro Maruo). Most of the artists in the book arent available in english, but it's still a good read. |
Gantz is very cool.It is sorta weird since the whole idea of the anime is shrouded in mystery. But all in all it is one of my favorite animes now.
Along side GTO...but GTO isn't weird its just wrong :vsign: |
Dreamland Japan tries to cover all aspects of manga from Horror to Mahjong, there's 5 pages on Maruo and a whole chapter on Tezuka.
If people buy it to read about their favourite manga then they'll probably be disappointed, but if you're interested in the history of manga, want to know more about the Japanese publications and the diversity of styles and themes out there then it's a good read. i'd say boogiepop phantom is the weirdst anime ever followed by lain, ergo proxy, texhonalyze, ghost hound, paranoid agent, paprika, perfect blue.
i'm not quite sure if "weird" or creepy is the word to best define boogiepop and some of these on the list above |

why do u think that Oni/Yokai is a constant theme in such animes?
either because of xintoism and the jap core culture or are they just creepy who like to scare the crap out of viewers? besides, if there's any native jap here, i'd like to know how such animes are seen by you guys, somehow it seems to be more mainstream and natural for u to talk about those themes than for us westerns |
