Yea windows likes to slap on their own bootloader every time u install windows so u gotta reinstall grub/lilo bootloader to get it back to the way u liked it before.

Yea its basically like having ur car stripped like taking out seat cushions, radios and stuff so it will go faster. It will look ugly to look at and won't impress people that's clueless about this sort of thing. :)

:rolleyes: Last summer, I worked with a PC Management team that were trying to make their own build of Vista for a Group of Engineers within the company. They had to have a 64-bit OS. I started out by testing software for compatibility issues! After all of this was done, I shadowed and helped one of the programmers in the company.

Having 8GB of Memory on the PC, he tweaked Vista to make it ridiculously fast. He programmatically allocated memory to services. This added with ReadyBoost and SuperFetch, made the OS a work of art in smoothness and speed! The programmer not being convinced that it's faster being a Hardcore Linux fan, he ran some tests to compare (rank in brackets, 1 being 1st);

Vista 64-bit (4)
Vista 64-bit tweaked (1)
XP (5)
XP 64-bit (3)
XP 64-bit tweaked (?)
Mandriva Linux (2)

Vista 64bit tweaked walked all over em except Linux which was slightly behind (shocked?). XP tweaked was damn fast, but crashed randomly.

I've been using linux for years and I'm loving it. Currently using Ubuntu 9.04 on both my laptop(For work) and my pc, and waiting for the release of the new version in a few days. Even though I've managed to play most of windows games in linux, I still have it on the pc for just in case and my family members.

So this is for a group of certain people and a certain job. Yes you could do it that way, remove un-needed services for the job you do. There is no way for Vista to become faster with only the tweaks you say. No f***ing way. I've been playing with Vista for years and it's a very big resource hog. The only way to achieve what you say is by removing services. But that would be a pain in the ass for the average user so we go back to my point.

It's kinda pointless to ask that question if u could just googled with keyword grub install you could find the answer to that instantly. So go work on your googling skills! ;) It is required when you're running linux anyway.
