I recommend Shinobi. It's a great Japanese movie. It's got a beautiful plot and amazing fight scenes. Oh, and did I mention it's about ninja? ;)

Shinobi is a visual feast.
As for the action and the plot, its ok.
And I found it far better that Last Samurai. You really have to be a Tom Cruise fan to sit through that, because not even Ken Watanabe can spare your senses.

chibichick83 09-26-2008 03:09 PM

Memoirs Of A Geisha - Absolutely stunning movie, a surefire must-see :)

Salvanas 09-26-2008 07:10 PM

So many recommendations!

I love it. Thank you, I'll watch all of them.

renegade 09-26-2008 07:41 PM

alright heres some weird "cult" films you may not have seen,as well as some you probably have.Sorry in advance, I have "bad taste" because I love horror and comedy the most,enjoy.

A Clockwork Orange (or anything else directed by Stanley Kubrick)
The Warriors (old but very cool, check it out)
Audition (Japanese Horror from director Takashi Miike)
Suicide Club (another japanese horror flick...weird)
Lost Highway (Director David Lynch, strangest man ever)
Requiem For A Dream (Depressing, but very good)
THE BIG LEBOWSKI (this is the most hilarious movie ever)
No Country For Old Men (Cohen Brothers directed,great acting,story)
The Shining (actually scary)
Cabin Fever (The director mocks the horror genre in this cult hit,very funny)
Evil Dead,Evil Dead 2, Army Of Darkness (Bruce Campbell is awesome)
Metropolis (very cool anime with 3D backgrounds,great story)
The Descent (creepy)
Hostel (Eli Roth, might make you sick)
Saw (the first on was great, the sequels are terrible)
Planet Terror (Awesome movie, mocks horror genre)
TAE GUK GI (Excellent Korean war movie,must see)
Zoolander (so stupid it's good)
Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas (Johnny Depp, crazy movie)
ORIGINAL Dawn Of The Dead (new one is good too, George A. Romero)
28 days later and 28 weeks later (very intense films)
Original HALLOWEEN (John Carpenter's small budget masterpiece)
Full Metal Jacket (Kubrick)
Old School (super funny, Will Ferrel at his best)
Lord Of War (based on a true story,Nick Cage is great in this)
The Shawshank Redemption (SEE THIS MOVIE)
Land Of The Dead (gorey,not the greatest acting,but I love it. Romero)
The Host (Korean Monster Movie)

and last but not least CANNIBAL HOLOCAUST, I must warn you, DO NOT watch this film if you are faint of heart, this is a disgusting movie that I only have seen once and that was enough.It was basically shot like blair witch long before that movie ever came to light.BE WARNED DO NOT WATCH IF YOU DO NOT LIKE GORE:eek: , I only list this movie because of how moving it is.

Hope this list will help you guys.

Aota 09-26-2008 08:29 PM

The Pagemaster, slightly old. 1995-96, to be specific.

And, Party Monster. It's a mockumentary of real-life Michael Alig, a self-proclaimed Club Kid in the 80s in New York City.

chibichick83 09-27-2008 05:13 PM

The Pagemaster was an absolutely wonderful movie! I remember it so well! :D

The best movie recommendations along the lines of big epic natural disaster action flicks that I can heavily recommend to you (as I'm such a HUGE fan of them myself and own them all on DVD) are as follows :) -

* The Day After Tomorrow
* Deep Impact
* Armageddon
* Dante's Peak
* Twister
* The Core
* Volcano

Collaterel is also another great suspense movie starring Jamie Foxx and Tom Cruise...I absolutely love that movie and also recommend it highly :)

Aota 09-27-2008 08:27 PM

Vanilla Sky starring Tom Cruise. It's pretty much a dream gone wrong.

The Science of Sleep was good too.

I also thought Silent Hill was done pretty well. If you feel like slipping into the horror department for a moment, Salvanas. ;]

chibichick83 09-28-2008 05:55 PM

Jumper is another really good action movie :)

Suki 09-30-2008 07:15 PM

Do they have to be Japanese? If not, I can give ya some recommendations you will surely appreciate, since I spend about 75% of my daily time a) watching movies I enjoy, b) watching movies my college teachers have said to watch, c) in cinema class, d) out in the street filming, e) studying Film History :)

Salvanas 09-30-2008 07:32 PM

Doesn't have to be Japanese at all.

2046 is a good movie. It tells the story about a writer. He switches between real life and ihs novel. Its really good.

Hyakushi 10-03-2008 04:08 AM

Have you seen The Ledgen with Jet Li?, its a pretty good movie, there are some other martial arts films that branch off the movie.

chibichick83 10-03-2008 04:24 AM

Flight Plan - Another great Jodie Foster action thriller, and it's also fairly psychological too :)

Rayfain 10-04-2008 01:26 PM

I don't know if you'd be interested but there is a brilliant Korean film called Musa(The Warrior).

It's an action/adventure/war film which many people say is the Korean Saving Private Ryan.
There is some gore as it is an action war film but it's not over the top.

You should definately give it a look.

chibichick83 10-04-2008 08:48 PM

The Core is another great action movie that I really enjoy watching - In fact, it's on TV right at this very moment here in the UK on one of the terrestrial channels this evening! :D

I <3 for mentioning those three.

Not sure if anyone has mentioned, but The Great Yokai War, Shinobi: Heart Under Blade, and Uzumaki are all good movies as well. Along with Paprika, for animated movies. And Batman: Gotham Knight.

Uriko 10-06-2008 12:01 AM

you should watch it sometime.

taro 10-06-2008 12:03 AM

ThirdSight 10-06-2008 12:07 AM

Salvanas, do yourself a favor and watch Blindness.

Then go read the book. Then watch the movie again.

Rinse and repeat.

Wasabista 10-07-2008 02:04 PM

A recent movie NOT to see is "Disaster Movie."

Went to see it with my wife because we wanted some light entertainment.

Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Reservoir Dogs [Quentin Tarantino. 1992] I imagine someone must have already mentioned this one, I think all of Tarantino's movies are worth a watch (a couple, actually), but if you like Mafia this is the one for you, and even Pulp Fiction [Quentin Tarantino. 1994]; the scene where Travolta and Samuel L. Jackson are talking about foot massages is just... amazing xD

xYinniex 10-09-2008 12:01 PM

angels with dirty faces (1935) Black and white Gangster film.

chibichick83 10-09-2008 12:27 PM

Dragon Tiger Gate is quite a fab action-packed Asian movie to check out :)
