Pulled muscle

Ok, so I discovered this small bump that hurt whenever I touched it on my neck. My sister said it was a pulled muscle so I was wondering if anyone knew anyway to numb the pain. Advil and ibuprofen [sp] don't have any effects on me anymore. I have to cheer tomorrow and I can't move my neck without it hurting.
Help?

Koir 12-05-2008 02:22 AM

Advil *is* ibuprofen. I would suggest *not* cheering as you *are* injured, and get that sore spot checked out by a doctor. Treating something you don't know is a sure way to make things worse.

Well, they've had different effects on me so I consider them different...and my mom won't let me not cheer. And she says I'll be fine as long as I ice it...even after I told her it was getting hard to breath.
She insists on saving money...even I'm not important enough for her anymore

Koir 12-05-2008 02:27 AM

Then you have problems beyond a sore neck, methinks. Well, explain the situation to whoever is the coach of the cheerleading team. Hopefully he/she will have more empathy and let you rest and heal. Afterwards, just point dear Mumsy at the coach and grab some popcorn.

And a riot shield.

KikiBunny23 12-05-2008 02:30 AM

I planned to tell my cheer coach about it, she'll most like just say to stay on the stands and cheer. Not to do half-time and if it starts to hurt, sit by her. My mom doesn't go to the games anyway.

Tyrien 12-05-2008 02:38 AM

Rest.

The only thing cheering with a pulled neck muscle is achieving is stupidity.

KikiBunny23 12-05-2008 02:43 AM

i know that...but I've learned to deal with pain from competition. But I told my mom if it gets worse in the morning then she's takin me to the hospital

Tyrien 12-05-2008 02:45 AM

It's not really about dealing with pain. A pulled muscle is what the name entails... a pulled muscle. If you cheer you can, and probably will make it worse and you'll be missing more than just one night of cheering.

Suit yourself though.

KikiBunny23 12-05-2008 02:47 AM

Trust me, if I had a choice, I wouldn't cheer. I've pulled my hamstring before, went about a week without going to the doctor, couldn't walk on my leg for a month. Yea...I don't wanna know what will happen with an injured neck

Aniki 12-05-2008 02:52 AM

A bump on a neck isn't a sign of a pulled muscle. As I know from my experience, a pulled muscle doesn't leave bumps. So it might actually be something worse, but I don't want scare you.

KikiBunny23 12-05-2008 02:53 AM

Well Steph is taking this medical course and she said it was. It's not all that noticable, just if you rub your finger over it, you can feel a small rubber ball like bump.
And you talking about it might be a tumour?

I'm not a doc, so I can't really tell, but judging from your age I can say that there are extremely low chances for you to have a tumour, unless you've traveled to Chernobyl on you summer holidays

KikiBunny23 12-05-2008 03:18 AM

It can be a noncancerous tumour.

As you can see...it is slightly raised

MMM 12-05-2008 03:29 AM

I'd go see the school nurse tomorrow sometime before cheer practice.

KikiBunny23 12-05-2008 03:33 AM

uh...problem with that. Nurse hates me, doesn't know how to do jack right and will just be all 'your name, period, where does it hurt? ok bye now'
and im cheerin for a basketball game

MMM 12-05-2008 03:35 AM

Are there any adults that will listen to you?

SephirothVVC 12-05-2008 03:37 AM

maybe you should just go to the hospital. its better to be safe sorry

KikiBunny23 12-05-2008 03:38 AM

MMM::sadly, no.

Sep::I would but my mom is asleep and I can't drive

then what about tomorrow? you should get there as soon as you can.

superheel 12-05-2008 04:51 AM

First Aid: Ice or Hot water. You can also boil a lemon, slice it in half and put it on the bump, that will reduce the pain.

Must do: Go to the doctor.

My mom said we will go only if it gets larger and/or the pain increases. At the moment it only hurts if something touches it of I bend my head the wrong way.

@superheel: I've been using ice, I was going to use the cold water 15min hot 10min rememdy but the water annoyed me to much.

superheel 12-05-2008 05:03 AM

You should try putting something hot there so your muscles can relax. Just hot enough that it won't burn you. Try the lemon remedy it really works.

KikiBunny23 12-05-2008 05:08 AM

I'd try it if we had lemon...haha
and I might in the morning but I want to try and get to sleep

MMM 12-05-2008 05:55 AM

Ice only helps right after an injury. use heat and start looking for an adult you can talk to.

yuujirou 12-05-2008 08:40 AM

hmm... a bit late on this... but....

R.I.C.E is typically the way to go for most injuries relating to stress >.>''

that is...

Rest
Ice
Compression
Elevation

and... if i'm understanding properly from what you've posted on this topic....
i don't think your stretching enough..
and you may not be warming up properly before a routine....
or.. you're just not strong enough to handle the stress of a routine x.x''

stretching 'properly' before doing anything helps warm you up and increases your over all flexibility. While your muscles are cold, they are extremely prone to injuries, so raising your internal temp by a few degrees through light exercise is the way to go =3

oh and for post injuries.. like... 24 hours after incident....
try applying cycles of warm and cold to the injured spot.
like... ice for 20 minutes, then heat for another 20, then re-ice
might help, might not.. but worth a try...

though like mmm said... ice works best when it's applied immediately after an injury...

and now that i think about it....
maybe you just have a knot in your neck? ._.''
like... maybe from excessive tensions
...try having someone massage it and see if it helps >.>'

oh....and.. on further thought... .. don't think i've ever heard of anyone ever pulling a muscle in their neck area.... =\
even when my friend got into a car accident... like.. the backlash gave a huge knot in her neck...
and after a bit of massaging over the area... she felt 'much' better >.>''

(you'll know it's a knot if a muscle is the source of pain, and when you try to squeeze it, it's tense and very stiff. also, i believe it should feel like one of those things were you try to 'pop' it but you can never really do it)

KikiBunny23 12-05-2008 12:06 PM

Well, it's not very stiff and it hurts to touch so I'm avoiding putting to much pressure on it. But I think I might have a clue what hapened...
My cheer coach has been making us work out with the basketball players so we are doing lunches with medicine balls and I think I might have done something to it when we held them above our heads.
Either that or I did somethin to it when I had that asthma attack from running yesterday.

Eiri 12-05-2008 05:28 PM

ouch asthma, I have that too, anywho I say rest, put some ice on that and then grab a small piece of cloth, run it thru hot water and leave it there for a bit and repeat. And I agree with yuujirou, you should try massaging the area, in any case you still need to go to the doctor, just tell your mom its hurting more

if that's the case...
it sounds like a strain

try not to use that part of your body too much
icing here and there helps

as a last resort of home remedies
try taking a hot bath
and loading the bath w/ a bit of salt
then soak for like 30 min or so

if all else fails, give it a week to see if anything happens
before going to see a doctor about it

KikiBunny23 12-05-2008 09:36 PM

Well, mom is taking me to the doctor as soon as my sister gets back. I've been having sharp pains shoot up my neck and the area where it hurts is pretty large.
I told my cheer coach and said I might be late to the game [it starts at 4pm, 3:36 right now] and she said thats fine

MMM 12-05-2008 09:42 PM

Let us know what the doctor says.

Eiri 12-05-2008 09:45 PM

yeah lets us know your ok

I'll be sure to

KikiBunny23 12-06-2008 02:42 AM

The ending result...lymphadenitis a.k.a. an infection in my lymph nodes. Which it's prolly somethin different now because the doctor pressed really hard on it [think of punching at a bruise] and now if anythin touches it, it stings.

Arikado 12-06-2008 02:53 AM

Acupuncture cures all. Too bad it's rarely practiced in the states...so lame.

Aniki 12-06-2008 04:02 AM

I new it wasn't a pulled muscle. It a good thing you decided to see a doctor, otherwise it would've gotten worse.

KikiBunny23 12-06-2008 04:20 AM

yea, but now i have to take this huge pills [z pak or somethin] 2 on the first day then 1 everyday from then on til it clears up.
