It depends which one.

The Yakuza is like an army in that all have specific ranks.

A photo of the Yamaguchi-gumi Yakuza members.

When you do a good job, you are promoted.

Like I said, going to prison is considered an honour which will gain you promotion on release.

I guess the smartest Yakuza keep their pinkies, make good money, stay alive and out of trouble.

But is it a must for a yakuza to have a tattoo like that or it depends of the "hierarchy" of the member within the organization?

It might be both.

seiki 06-14-2009 09:34 PM

why? they seem like any other mobsters or gangs just you know they are in japan and maybe america but i don't know that info would have come from gtalol.

Aota 06-16-2009 09:20 PM

I believe I did mention Yakuza Moon, and Confessions of a Yakuza, as great sources for yakuza information and background.

YukisUke 06-16-2009 09:27 PM

I must get those books!!

MMM 06-16-2009 09:28 PM

Yakuza Moon isn't actually about the yakuza that much. The writer is the daughter of a yakuza member who is basically ousted at the beginning of the book.

But it still deals with the Yakuza in a way.

It's a great book, a true story (the pics posted earlier of the woman in a full body tattoo is the writer) but don't get it if you think you are going to learn much about the yakuza.

I'd still get that book as well as the other one. Just saying.

Aota 06-16-2009 10:05 PM

It deals with yanki, I believe? Is that not like the American "gangsta"?

Yanki tend to be drop-out drug users with no direction in life. Sometimes they become low-level yakuza errand-boys, but yanki and yakuza are different things.

Aota 06-16-2009 10:44 PM

Alright. Well, I guess you were right then, about Yakuza Moon.

But, have you picked up "Confessions..." yet?

I have not, but I hear it is very good.

Aota 06-17-2009 01:55 AM

If I felt like parting with it, I may actually think of mailing it to you. Or maybe even a brand spanking new copy as a birthday "thank you" present for the advice about mine and my girlfriend's trip to the Rising Sun.

It's a very enriching book.

That's a very nice thought, but don't feel obligated. Thank you!

Aota 06-17-2009 01:58 AM

No obligation. :] It's a very great book, and I love reading. So if you're interested, I wouldn't mind splurging a measly $15 USD for ya.

That is very kind of you, the gesture is very much appreciated, but I couldn't imagine me letting you do that.

Aota 06-17-2009 02:12 AM

Oh well. :P

I've seen documentaries that actually follow around a yakuza newbie, and their day-to-day lives. Along with interviews with age-old yakuza members. Pretty great stuff.

YukisUke 06-17-2009 02:17 AM

I think I know what documentary you're talking about. I have yet to see it, though.

Aota 06-17-2009 02:21 AM

It was very educating if you want to learn about a yakuza's day-to-day lifestyle.

And, I hate to throw out educated guesses, but I'm pretty sure that most yakuza are different when it comes to money spending habits, respect, and honor.

I believe you're right about that. Not all Yakuzas have the same ideals.

komitsuki 06-17-2009 03:14 AM

Not all Yakuza members are Japanese.

Hisayuki Machii - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Interestingly enough.

YukisUke 06-17-2009 04:40 PM

That's cool. I guess anyone in Asia, not just the Japanese, can become a member of the Yakuza.

bELyVIS 06-17-2009 04:45 PM

A American friend of mine (he's huge!) was offered a job as a bodyguard for a boss in Kobe. He politely declined.

At least he let him down politely instead of running away or insulting the guy. It would have turned out even worse. Probably.

seiki 06-17-2009 08:34 PM

so i saw a show on discovery channel that involved the yakuza and it said they still used swords some times and i was just wondering if this was true?

Aota 06-17-2009 08:40 PM

Maybe. I mean... How else are they going to cut off a finger at the first sign of disrespect? :P A pocket knife?

seiki 06-19-2009 02:56 AM

The first finger that they cut off of me, I would've been gone. Out of the Yakuza.

Sure enough, man. Although... There was a really STUPID "yakuza ninja" boss who cut off all of his cook's fingers, put them on sushi, and made the cook eat the sushi. The reason? The cook spilled hot soup on the son's lap. ...This was a scene in Machine Girl.

The yakuza isn't a softball team that you can just quit when you get bored.

seiki 06-21-2009 12:12 AM

LOL. Thats true I bet you would have to leave the country to avoid them. I mean they wouldn't want you to just run off and take their secrets or anything. Plus it would look bad if some punks could just leave their organization.
