Is Google Translate An Accurate Translator ?

If you are translating more than a word at a time, then no, not for Japanese.

For one word at a time try jisho.org instead or a rollover tool like rikaichan/rikaikun.

Google translate changes several words into Names randomly, will sometimes just pull a phrase out of thin air seemingly and other crazy things.


It can be useful if you want a very vague idea of what a page of Japanese is about in English, but never ever use it the other way around!

Also please don't do one word at a time from English to Japanese in a dictionary of any kind then stick them together to make a sentence, I see this a lot and it is not how grammar works at all :)

It can be accurate... but very rarely is for language combinations like English and Japanese. The chances that it is accurate for whatever you are trying to translate are about 1 in 1000.

If the sentence is short, in perfect grammar, with absolutely no ambiguities, and something comprehensible in the other language... You have about a 25 to 50% chance of getting a fair translation (not perfect by any stretch, but at least able to be understood as close to the same meaning in the target language.)

The problem is that very very few people write things that follow the pattern above... Even the tiniest bit of ambiguity can turn the whole translation into something completely nonsensical.

I tried this sentence for a Japanese translation:

I wish you happness
I got
私はあなたの幸せを望む
Agreeable?

I tend not to trust translators. For Japanese, I already know most grammar, so I just look up words from PSPINC's dictionary. Really nice dictionary, by the way, if you can deal with Furigana instead of Romaji.
