I need to add something to this... now I KNOW that japanese underage drinking rules are a complete joke. I was out with 3 of my buddies, and a random bunch of high school girls just invited themselves over to our table and joined us... not only were they in the izakaya, then had clearly been drinking, and openly talked about that fact that they were in high school in front of the wait staff.. who still readily dished out the alcohol to them. I was like WOW.. its one thing to buy shit at a conbini but to be allowed to be in an izakaya and be served alcohol without even a flinch... that really said something to me about how alcohol is viewed in Japan.

I wonder if the fact that these statistics contain people from the age of 15 alters the 'reality'. In other words, I've heard that in some European countries the legal drinking age is much younger than in places like Japan or America. So I wonder what these stats would look like if they checked consumption of alcohol per capita of the legal drinking age of each country. Not that my thinking isn't flawed either.... I mean, RickOShay pointed out that underage drinking is a common occurance.

isn't it common everywhere for under aged to drink?
i was able to purchase alcohol when i was 14 thou law says i had to be 18 and of course it was trial and error to see which shops and what ladies would sell... . around that time parties started including alcohol. it was and still is normal when 16 and 17 years old can get in the clubs...but still - not always.

steven. it wouldn't change anything if under aged were to be excluded from statistics. Japanese may drink more often but they don't drink physically as much as UK or RUS.
