And I've failed to see how this question is stupid, unless the asker wasn't being genuine about it, and was only asking because he wanted to complain about it, though I don't believe that's the case. Its a question about the country's culture. There isn't anything wrong with that.

I don't think there are any more AV idols than there are American women in US porn.
Although I suppose that if AV is the only type of thing you watch, it might LOOK like all Japanese girls are in it.
It may be surprising to you, but there are other types of Japanese media.

I also think that another factor of many thinking that the Japanese are "perverted" (unfortunately, my mother sees them that way...) is because of the type of merchandise that is sent here in specialty shops. Mmm... What I wrote was a little vague.

Have you ever visited the website (Jlist.com)? They sell A LOT of erotica type games. Also, a lot of anime contains adult material, and a lot of the American anime watchers (at least the ones I know) LOVE the adult material that some of the Japanese anime contains, so when they shop online for "Japanese merchandise" they buy the adult items... Like dating sims, body pillows, "oppai mouse", and even magazines loaded with pictures of porn stars from Japan.

Unfortunately, that type of stuff gets spread around, which is what causes stereotypes. Terribly close-minded.

Nevertheless, I personally believe that the Japanese have the coolest culture around ;) I personally prefer it to my own.

Unless he can show us that the female population to porn actress ratio in Japan is substantially higher in Japan than in other countries, he's basing this observation purely on the # of porn titles on his hard drive.
