Concern over drop in Japanese students abroad

Since the number of Japanese students studying in the United States peaked 10 years ago at more than 47,000, the numbers have begun to decline and there is concern that the growing number of other Asian students overseas could hurt Japan's future.

"In macro terms, there is no question that Japan's competitive advantage and edge is being eroded" by this trend, said David H. Satterwhite of the Fulbright Commission Japan.

The decline can be attributed to a number of factors, including Japan's sustained economic recovery...

Maybe it's because Japan's education standards are good enough for them not to want to move.

Plus, nowadays the amount of paperwork to be done and the cost of moving abroad can put anyone off.

If the quality of Japanese schools had anything to do with it, there would be MORE students studying abroad now than in the past. The level of Japanese schooling has been falling recently - largely because of the idiocy of Yutori Kyouiku.

Either way, I don`t think it`s so much the quality of schooling that drives people to study abroad. It`s more the *experience*. Fewer people are choosing to experience something outside of their daily reach. Whatever the reasons are for that, it isn`t really a good thing in the long run.

Is it just in the US that the number of Japanese students are dropping, or elsewhere too?
