I dunno, I'm otaku and two of my friends from the anime club came to Japan with me to teach English. One left last year and the other will leave this year (err next year, 2009)

I just generally think the most shocking thing is what we consider Otaku in North America is more or less just generally Immature here, but not terribly Otaku-ish.

My students think I'm cute because I know about Japan pop-culture, the real otaku students floor me with their vastly superior knowledge and generally consider me to be "Not Otaku but trying."

Komiket and most conventions here are pretty cosplay free but other times you see cosplayers where in North America it just wouldn't fly.

I dunno, it feels like I've been living in a dreamworld for the last two years. The only real kicker to my otakuness is realizing that learning Japanese is FRIGGEN HARD.

Christ all Kanji Mighty I've only got a 4 year old reading comprehension at best so I can't read anything. I think being surrounded by anime and manga and games but being unable to understand any of it will be the real stab in the face to many Otaku that come here.

I like some anime and rock from there.But more i want to see some shrines and the many things there and some places for scenery as well as places for the many places of the history.

If you have never traveled where do you find a good agent for tickets.That dont make u save for ever or send u bankrupt but a decent price ?

Im planning on gettin to Japan in Febuary/March 2009.
Iv got nothing planned for when i get over there, jus gonna see where the wind takes me. Iv got a couple of places I wanna see - mainly Tokyo an Kyoto- but does anyone have any must see recommendations?

Well i voted for yes, because im currently in Japan BUT im not here because of anime or at least not only because of that. My faszination for this country has started with anime, like for most people, but it became a deeper interest over the years, finally bringing me here on a working holiday.
So if i had to put it on the line i´d say i wouldnt be here without anime, so yes!

I love anime, manga, and J-music but I wouldn't call myself an otaku, lol. My love for those things isn't near as much as it is for the Japanese language, and culture by itself. I definitely want to go to Japan, but it's not "otaku - drive" propelling me xD

I voted yes because i originally got interested in Japan from DBZ ages ago, but that anime cycle was short. My interest lay with the language and culture. So for me, the most exciting thing about being in japan (other than the fact that i was in Japan) was being immersed in language every day and making new friends . I was amazed at how much Japanese i could actually understand lol. And i cant lie, it was nice to be immersed by the women too.:D

So, my interest are basically east Asian cultures and languages, this year i went to Japan for a week and a half, next year, Taiwan and Japan.
