Eating Horse
Okay so I might get attacked for this thread by people who have horses and find it grotesque...
I would just like to apologize in advance for what I'm about to say: I'm sorry. ... But my Japanese teacher has eaten raw horse in Japan-- I was wondering if anyone had any comments on what it may taste like, etc? Is it succulent? Gamey? :glasses: Where might I find some good ol' eating-horse whilst in Japan? |
I once ordered chicken at a resturant once and they brought me horse instead! They though they could get away with it, I was livid!
That 6ft drumstick didn't fool me. |
It isn`t really all that uncommon. Look around for places advertising 馬刺 or 桜鍋.
Raw it`s sort of like very lean beef (in my opinion), but cooked is a bit gamey. Significantly less so than deer though. I usually avoid it though because it`s always served with ginger, which I can`t eat. |
I believe it is most common to eat horsemeat on Kyushu. Like whale, it isn't a very common item in most of Japan.

I only had horse sashimi the one time but for me it was a bit rubbery in how it chewed. Besides that it was very similar to beef in taste and texture. As for finding it, it seemed like nearly every sushi place had it on the menu in Hiroshima.

I eat horse every time I eat breakfast. Nothing beats some mettwurst on your bread. ;)
They are fun to ride though and really nice and loyal animals too. Never had any Japanese horse dishes. |
yeah.. we eat horses all the time in Norway too, i don't see what's wrong with it xD
