Japan visit May/June 2010

We are planning on booking flights for Japan soon and was wondering in anyone had thoughts on which direction we should travel due to the summer and potentially rainy season, either Tokyo down to Hiroshima or the reverse.

Travelling 20 May to 10 June, how much rain can we expect? Does it rain for days and then stop or for short periods in a day?

Would love any suggestions on how to make our trip more memorable (we are not planning on hiking great distances or mountain climbing). Thanks
