5 days in Tokyo
 

I'm going to Tokyo in early August. I'd love to know how much money I would need for accommodation and food for those 5 days. Would I need more than 600 dollars?

It depends on what you're willing to live on. Stay at a backpacker's hotel and buy all your food from Lawsons and you could stay under that.

Do you have to factor in train money to get around the city? That can add up.

What standard do you want to live by. You can make it at hostels and cheap food for that much, but if you don't want to live it up, why are you going in the first place?

For a "reasonable" time touring for a "typical" American tourist, I would budget USD 250-300 per day in Tokyo per person, less if you will be sharing accommodations. That is for accommodations, food, transportation, snacks, entrance fees, drinks from vending machines, and a bit of shopping. You can of course spend more, or you can spend less, but that's my baseline.

I wanna enjoy myself. But I don't have time to be there for more than 5-6 days. And I don't wanna pay more than 80-9 dollars a day for accomodation. Food shuldnt be more than 40-50 bucks a day at most. I'll be shopping for clothes as they're cheaper there than here in Norway, and probably a bunch of electronics and books/manga.

For the time being my maximum budget is 1200 USD for the ticket, and 2000 dollars for the rest.

Depending on your size you may be out of luck clothes wise also electronics are not cheaper there in fact the few things I was pricing were more expensive then in North Amercia.

@Polar, last time I checked, Norway was not in North America :D [You can probably blame me for that one, I assumed he was from America as he used "dollar" w/o specifying which country's dollar....]

I don't know prices in Norway (never been, but I want to), but I can't believe many places are more expensive than in Tokyo. You can buy things there you really can't elsewhere, but it's not cheap. And if you want cheap shopping, go to Hong Kong or China.

"want"? What is this, priceline, where you name your own price? :confused: Seriously, do some due diligence and look for accommodation before you decide go, hotels are pretty expensive in Tokyo. I think you can find stuff in that price range, just ensure you are happy staying there.

I've stayed at some decent places for a little more than $80 a night. One place I've stayed in a few times has a good breakfast for $5 and all the free espresso you care to make.

The only thing I found it hard to budget for the first time I went to Tokyo was the transportation around the city. That can add up!

And it is true about the clothing. If you are on the short side and thin things will fit you, my 5'4" friend found out that Japan is his perfect off-the-rack country. When I went with two female friends only one of us could just barely fit into the largest women's clothing. We were all too tall, too busty and our shoulders too wide.

I'm actually 5,5" and weigh 127 pounds - which is why I thought Japan and/or Korea would be perfect shopping destinations.

Also, this is not for you but the other poster; I doubt that anything besides fruits are more expensive in Japan than here in Norway.

As for buying electronics, at least get a price how much they go for in your country and then compare. Granted the Euro goes a lot farther then the dollar there but still.

Here in NA there is the MSRP but in most stores you'll never pay that, however in Japan you will. Unique items are different a matter altogether.

What I still don't understand is that a new AAA videogame in Japan goes for 8000 yen and in NA it's $60-$70 dollars
