Places that inspired Hayao Miyazaki
Hello everybody,
I thought it would be cool to take a trip in the future, to the locations which inspired Hayao Miyazaki for some of the scenery in his movies. I've found a couple places already, but if anyone has info on some of the other locations, I'd be happy to know of it, if you wouldn't mind sharing! :) I hope nothing changes too much from its current condition seeing as if I am able to make this journey, it probably won't be for quite some time-and it will require quite a bit of cash, I'm sure. If anyone else is interested in visiting some of these places, here's the list I've made so far... Inaba perhaps but really it could be any country side in Japan.

Thanks for the ideas. I'll check them out!

Beautiful! Thanks for that. I remember when I was doing some research for my first trip to Japan, I came across a wooded area with...perhaps some sort of gnarly tree or a strange path...red poles/gates? I can't recall exactly, but I remember reading that it was one place that inspired Miyazaki. It may have been yakushima, but I thought the name may have started with an 'F'.
...If this extremely vague description strikes a chord with anyone, I'd love to hear what you've got on it. Thanks again for the suggestions! |

I don't think so. That's in Kyoto, right? It had just a few of...something, I believe, but it was mostly a kind of creepy, woodsy looking place. If I recall correctly, I think I originally saw it on Japanguide.com while searching for interesting areas. Thanks for the suggestion.

Couldn't tell ya, pic is not mine ;)
But it's a somewhat common shrine "design" if you will |
If its the place I think it is (Ihimeken?) The hot springs that inspired Spirited Away is surrounded by modern urban buildings featuring a shopping mall.
Its still a nice place though and is the oldest bathhouse in Japan... just dont go expecting of a big place in the countryside overlooking beautiful scenery. |

Hey, thanks for the suggestion. I may add Fujimi to the list. ...However, I don't think that's the place I saw before. The place I'm thinking of may be Yakushima-it looks very similar-but I remember a specific picture that I haven't seen since. The details are vague, but I feel like I'd know it if I saw it. ...Then again, maybe not. :P
Thanks, everyone for your help! :) |
One of the places Miyazaki repotedly based Spirited Away on was the Edo-Tokyo Openair Architectural Museum:
http://www.tatemonoen.jp/ They don't seem to have an English website - but I'm sure if you google you will find plenty of information about it. It's in Koganei park, a little bit out of central Tokyo, but not hard to get to. It's a very interesting museum anyway - lots of old buildings have been moved from other parts of Tokyo, and rebuilt there in the park. |

Unfortunately, they've been fixing it up and modernizing it a little, so it's lost a little of it's "ghostly" charm. |
