Favorite Island?
Do you have a favorite island when traveling through Japan?

I have never been so I will not vote but hokkaido is on my list for when I get to go.
|
I'd have to say Honshu because it's the only island I've "officially" been to.... I've been to Wakkanai, Hokkaido, but I can't officially confirm that, if you catch my drift....

Been to all five and each looks and feels different. Tough I like Hokkaido and Okinawa a lot as vacation spots, I myself am a Honshu kid by blood and I wouldn't live anywhere else. Honshu, for its sheer size, simply gives you the most variety.

Has to be Awaji Island for me. I went there this summer and stayed at the convention center that's next to the garden memorial. One of the most beautiful gardens I've seen in my life.
To get to the island you have to cross the longest extansion bridge in the world from Kobe I recorded a part of it on camera, you can see it YouTube - Japan Travel Lounge Music Video FULL HD at 3:39 Actually in the off-season, (i went in July). The price of the hotels are super cheap, I paid 129$ per day for a room which is normally 350$ during the golden week. Next target = Okinawa! |
I haven't travelled all that much through Honshu or the other islands. Of course I've travelled extensively throughout Hokkaido though over the last 7 years. I love the landscapes and climate here and the fact that although it's something like 25% of the Japanese landmass it only has 6% of the population. Hokkaido is not crowded, it's mostly forests, mountains, lakes and farmland with a only a few big towns and cities. Perfect for me as I really don't like heavily populated places and avoid cities as much as I can.

I voted Shikoku but what I really wanted to vote for was Awaji!!
But it's not in the list... Awaji has great onsens and amazing beef!! |
I voted for Honshu, but only because I've liked what I've seen on TV about it. I've seen some 10 minute documentary on 'winter specialties' in Hokkaido, & was impressed by what I've seen. I voted for Honshu, because I have seen it most on TV, but thats not to say I dislike any of the other islands. When I get the chance to come to Japan, I hope to visit & experience a small drop of life on each of it's beautiful islands :)

To visit I will go for Honshu... just because that is where the rest of the world consider to be the origin of Japanese culture, and it does have a lot to offer to tourists
But to live, my favorite will always be Kyushu.... |
I like this poll but it'd be nice to narrow it down a little,
Are we talking about for visiting, living, the food, the people, partying, the sightseeing etc? |
I have been to all off them, and i think each one has its one beauty. Its so hard to deside:
I could go for Hokkaido for its beautifull nature and awesome people, or i could go for Honshu with its huge megacities and Japanese popculture, or how about Shikoku with its beautifull little temples, surfing spots and getaways? I also liked Kyushu with the big city with a little twist (Fukuoka if compared to other Japanese citys) and bathing in hot sand on the southern tip. And last but not least Okinawa with its alternative lifestyle and food and many small places to get away to. Hm.... I think i´ll go with Honshu, because it covers most of it. The beautifull nature in the north (autum hiking in Tohoku is awesome), the megacity Tokyo, all the temples in Kyoto, recent history in Hiroshima and beautifull places like Amanohashidate, Miyajijima and Matsushima! But every iland has its own flavour, so i recommend to find the right one for you or just go and see them all : ) |
