Where to get a Kimono in Tokyo, Osaka or Kyoto?

Hello, I'm travelling to Japan in a bit more than two weeks and I would really love to buy a Kimono while in Japan. I have a questions about this and I would really appreciate any help.

Firstly, where should I go to purchase a Kimono?

How much do they generally cost?

Is there any places you'd recommend?

Will it be easier/more economical to buy a second hand kimono?

Thank you :pandahurray:

kimono is so common in Japan. You may find in most garment stores in Japan.

if you really want those really nice kimono , start your budget at $1000

Thank you for your response samokan :)

Hmm $1000 is a bit out of my price range.

Do you think it will be better if I look for a second hand kimono?

I think I will be wearing it although not often, it will be primarily a collection piece.

I wrote the average money that you might need.

Stores like Daimaru, Takashimaya or Mitsukoshi have some Kimono boutiques inside. I have seen them having Kimono sale from $300.. this is just the kimono. Obi and undergarments are sold separately so even though the Kimono itself is cheap you are still going to spend more on the accessories.

I don't really own a Kimono, so I don't have much knowledge on its prices.

I don't know any second hand Kimono store though so I can't give a comparison. Most Japanese don't sell their Kimono, it is usually handed down from Mothers to Daughters.

In Honmachi ( Osaka ) , there is a really affordable Kimono store there. Just along the Shotengai from Honmachi -> Shinsaibashi-> Namba.

In the big cities it will be hard to find a bargain on a used kimono if you are looking for "the real thing". Out in the boonies... and if you speak that language a bit,....... the "pickings" are much better.

Are you sure you do not mean a yukata? Those are not silk, but cotton.... and are FAR cheaper. They can have an obi with them too. They can be very beautiful also. To a lot of Westerners.... it generically gets called "kimono".... but it really is not.

best,

there are really some nice yukkata out there, and its much easier to find than Kimono. Most stores in Asakusa have yukkata, and its usually less than $100 including the obi. You don't have to worry about undergarments too.

you might want to check it out too:ywave:

I recommend a shop in Kyoto called Kyoto Kimono Plaza.
This shop sells the defective kimono but which is luxury kimono,so you can get luxury kimono on low cost.

Wait, what do you envision when you said a kimono? The full thing: IE, the7 layers and its formal for attending weddings?

Or are you thinking of a typical yukata?
