Vietnamese food.
Any experts on Vietnamese food here?
I'm trying to find out other names of a product. It's a meat type food, kinda has the consistency of tofu, if i remember correctly. My friend who is Vietnamese referred to it as (this is how she pronounced it) "yaw". Any help? |
Hey now, this is a Japanese food forum.
|
Yeah, I know. But I also know there are a bit of Vietnamese people here.
|
Eww, why would you wanna eat something that has the consistency of tofu?lol
|
If only Housetek was online. xD

Even though this is the Japanese food forum, I'm Viet so I think I can help you out.
I have a feeling you're talking about giò ḷua (pronounced yaw loo-wa). It's a whitish Vietnamese ham/meat-loaf thing that (as you described)can have a tofu-like consistency. Amm.. and sometimes it's also called chả lụa . |

this stuff i'm talking about, it comes like either in slices or in a roll where you can slice it. cause she used to bring me slices for lunch. i say slices; they're like 1/4 - 1/2 inch thick. =/ anyways. more breakdown. lol also, someone once told me it smelled like cat food. -EDIT: CASE CLOSED- i looked up "giò ḷua" in google and found a pic. that's it. thanks for the help!! =] |

We Japanese people eat many foods that some have come to view as Japanese foods but in fact they came from other countries. Examples: ラーメン = raamen, is actually Chinese style noodles カレー = curry, is actually an Indian dish マボ豆腐 = mabodofu, is actually a Chinese dish http://img.gkblogger.com/blog/imgdb/.../061/377_2.JPG お茶 = green tea, is actually from China 餃子 = gyoza, is actually Chinese http://www.cuisinejaponaise.be/img/Hama-Shin_Gyoza.jpg |
I also believe you had giò ḷua, also known as chả lụa. In the U.S. you might also find it under the name of Vietnamese ham. Its very good braised in fish sauce (nước mắm) and garlic.
Giò ḷua (Silky lean meat paste):I would also recommend Phở, a type of beef noodle soup. |
