Oh, how cute! Thanks for sharing. I saw a book a book on how to do these in Barnes and Noble the other day.

Nyororin 02-11-2008 03:43 AM

These aren`t crazy - they`re *typical*. Most moms try to make things like this for their kids in school - mostly kindergarten, but occasionally for elementary school events too.

You sort of get judged on how nice the bento looks.

-I have a kid starting kindergarten in April... And I have been gathering the little things you need to make the things in some of these. There are egg shapers, shaped onigiri pressers, nori punch cutters, sausage cutters, etc etc etc.

With all the tools, it doesn`t take *nearly* as long as it looks like it would. Even now, with little experience, I can whip one of these up in about 10 minutes.

hypekstatic 02-11-2008 05:36 AM

^ really? o_O i dont know... molding chicken to look like MUSHROOMS
seems kind of time consuming...

anyway, lucky kids...
when i was a kid i had a brown paper bag, with a ziplock bag of chips
and a ham and cheese sandwich wrapped in foil. lol
then in 3rd grade i upgraded to a Sailor Moon lunchbox.
oh the joys of youth.

Mum used to prepare these artistic lunches for me when I attended kindergarten in Japan. The good ol' days, I vividly remember the rabbit-shaped apple pieces :)

Sinner 02-11-2008 05:42 PM

How cute, must have been a lot of work there....

Sinner 02-11-2008 07:22 PM

I wish I could make such nice bento boxes. :)

devils 02-11-2008 09:34 PM

Man all that food looks so good  The boxes are cute too!

hikariguu 02-12-2008 03:11 AM

Chicken? Mushrooms?? Huh?

The only "mushroom" shaped things I see up there are chocolate snacks that someone just dumped out of their box. Those aren`t exactly home made. You can buy them literally *anywhere*, for around 100 yen a box.

slit a cross into the sausages and cook them, when they are cooked, the 'leg's' flip up.

Thunda 02-12-2008 07:15 PM

Neffiline 02-13-2008 02:50 PM

I agree! I've never seen such CUTE bentos~

Sinner 02-13-2008 03:23 PM

I want strawberrys now!

iamjenii 02-19-2008 04:18 PM

I've been trying to prepare bento for my hubby lately...
Damn, it's so difficult when you don't have too many things on hand ;;==
Anyways, here goes:

Left tier: 3 shortbread cookies (stacked), piggie w/ranch dressing, romaine salad
Right tier: Soy-marinated chicken & white rice

Good thing he ate it all, that always makes me happy :3

Sinner 02-19-2008 05:11 PM

Wow you are really talented! :D
It looks delicious!

Simple yet grand, not to mention really tasty-looking. Make one for me? lol

I think the pikachu one is adorable! Lunch /w a theme, pure genius

iamjenii 02-19-2008 10:09 PM

Thanks guys :3
To be honest, it IS really quite bland in the aesthetics area...even more difficult when he's a picky eater and there's a limitation to what I have to pack.
I'll try to take more pictures!

iamjenii 02-20-2008 04:49 PM

Left side: Piece of fancy eclair cushioned with some more shortbread cookies and some pieces of Italian bread
Right side: Meatballs & cheese ravioli with tomato sauce

From last night's dinner :3

LulzDefender 02-20-2008 09:05 PM

Those are so cute! I'm not sure I'd be able to eat them.

They're like little delicious works of art.

iamjenii 02-22-2008 02:03 AM

GA! Sorry guys...I have this habit of not taking pics of bento after making them so I'm trying to stay with it ;;==

Anyways...

From left to right: 3 onigiri separated with pieces of bacon, dumpling sauce in piggie, 4 dumplings, baran separating 3 orange slices, 6 octopus-shaped weiners (sorry you can’t see the tentacles…) and a cream puff.

Not bad for not knowing what to make for dinner or to pack for the next day’s lunch, eh? Maybe tomorrow we’ll have teriyaki chicken? Who knows?

This is my first Japanese-finger-food looking bento. Most of my other attempts seemed to look like "packed lunches" and there is a subtle difference. Jeez this is time-consuming!

xYinniex 02-22-2008 01:04 PM

it does look yummy.
but isn't like 3 onigiri ALOT?

well. it is for me.
your husband doesn't look that picky to me. XD

iamjenii 02-22-2008 05:22 PM

@ yinnie: Oh! Thank you! I was really really pleased with how this one turned out. The onigiri are like...tiny (like 2.5 inches). And in accordance with bento ratio (half starch, quarter main dish & 2 eighths sides/veggies), it was about right.
The man won't eat cooked fish but he'll eat sushi ;;== Weirdo

xYinniex 02-23-2008 12:11 AM

+_+*

i thought it was the other way round. >.<

weirdo.[in the nicest possible way]

Suki 02-23-2008 01:02 AM

Gooooooossssh I'm so hungryyy >.<" They look reaally nice, eating one of those must feel like ruining a masterpiece!

Here are some more:

Look at this! o.Ô

Nakishee 02-24-2008 08:04 PM

Aaaah! More themes!!! XD I love them all!
And they seem so healthy, so much veggies and fruits
that is the perfect way to get your little kids to eat their veggies, make them into a cute bento
i wouldnt mind eating a masterpiece as long as i would get another the next day^^

xYinniex 02-24-2008 10:17 PM

WOOP
i want the FEBREZE bento

Neffiline 02-25-2008 04:40 PM

Awww...so cute. I'm not sure I could bring myself to eat those. I'd have to be starving. LOL

Suki 02-25-2008 10:15 PM

What's the PS controller made of? o.Ô Mashed black rice?

Nakishee 02-25-2008 10:58 PM

probably rice wrapped in seaweed like the laptop, it's harder to make out though, i couldnt handle that much seaweed i have a hard enough time having it in sushi >.<

Michigan90 03-02-2008 06:26 AM

Wow

Yeah, the PS controller is made up of three balls of onigiri wrapped in nori (seaweed).

I'm totally impressed by the bento makers' creativity.

Work of art...

Amnell 03-02-2008 06:59 AM

Jeez, I could never a) bring myself to eat one, b) put so much effort into making a lunch!

Ahaa, I see. And what about the nails in the hand that's holding the spray bottle? o.Ô

xYinniex 03-02-2008 07:36 PM

colouring and probably either egg, or fish balls flattened[ same taste] {like meatball misture but made with fish]

mzkitty 03-03-2008 10:29 PM

i've been wanting to make some for my guy but it doesn't seem like it would fill him up.. he eats a lot!

EChan 03-06-2008 06:25 PM

Thanks for the thread! These bentos are so cute, I make sometimes those too, but not that cute .´____`.'
