Why do you say that? What's the difference between American and Italian Pizza?

I`ve never personally been to Italy, so I can`t say from personal experience - but it`s my understanding that what is presented as pizza in the US is significantly different from what pizza is in Italy.

I see... Personally, I wouldn't go as far as saying "basterdised", though. When I went to Italy, I admit, the pizza was on a different level when it came to taste, but it wasn't hugely different to places like Pizza Hut and Dominoes etc. I'd say the main difference would be the quality of the base. It's kinda like French baguettes. They're made in the same fashion in England, but they always seem to taste a million times better when bought in France.

I will say one thing though, I only saw one "deep pan" pizza in Italy. It was usually thin and cooked in those traditional ovens, which I think give it extra deliciousness (if that is even a word, lol).

ETA; Slightly off topic, but... If you really really want to see someone Japanese cringe and gag, offer them some rice pudding. :D It seriously never fails.

My local Oriental (Chinese, really) supermarket has glass jars of rice pudding in the Japanese aisle. Are they just doing it to piss off the Japanese...? ;) The same aisle has Korean food. Is rice pudding big in Korea, perhaps?

Even within the US there are all kinds of pizza, from NY thin slice to Chicago-style, which is like a pie.

Hehehe... The other day, I ate sushi for the first time. The fish taste was a bit too overwhelming for me, so I dumped a bunch of soy sauce onto it and it was easier to swallow. :o

I'm terribly sorry. m(_ _)m When it comes to food, I'm used to eating American and Chinese food. I'm not very used to eating Japanese food, but I'm trying to get an acquired taste for it so that I'll be able to eat what my host family makes for me when I become a foreign exchange student in a few years.

I have never heard someone call the taste of Japanese food too overwhelming before. The fish taste should not be overwhelming...though I can understand your anticipation for the first time. The taste of soy sauce is much more impactful on your taste buds than the sushi should be.

Indeed. I hope the fish wasn't off!

When I was in Japan I met up with a group on a tour guide. We went to a fancy restaurant. And we Americans started chowing down. We were swapping our plates all up and down this long table because everyone wanted to taste everyone elses food and of course we were loud. There were 4 Japanese students with us. It was part of their assignment to hang with us and speak English. At first they were kind of just glaring at us. But one of them, he kind of seemed liked the leader, (his name was not Kenji, but he told us to call him Kenji) yelled something at the others and they smiled and started acting just like us. Later, I asked Kenji's younger brother what he said. It was something like: "This is what we're here for! It's your opportunity to be American! Go for it!" I asked him were we THAT bad. He just kinda smirked and said "Hai." about 10 times.
