USA/THAI/PHILLIPINES rice is LONG GRAIN and have less sugar in them
Japanese rice is SHORT GRAIN and is usually fatter and stickier. ^^

As xYinniex said, Japanese rice is short grain. I use calrose rice, as that's easily available here in Canada. It was also recommended by a Japanese lady who makes the sushi for a supermarket here.

I wet my hands with water with a little rice vinegar (the straight stuff, not the ready-prepared sushi mixture with sugar and salt) added to stop the rice sticking to my hands too much.

What have you try putting in your Onigiri?

I've been using the "standard traditional" ingredients like Tuna, Salmon, eel, ume

What else hve everyone tried?

Yakiniku!!!!

Hi I always eat onigiri as a lunch and once I've eaten Yakiniku onigiri in Korea:)IT WAS GREAT!

EmmaTheJuneBug 07-16-2008 06:26 AM

Uhh, I don't know if this is the right place to ask this, but I love onigiri, and I used to make it but I don't really have the time anymore.. so I was wondering is there anywhere in Canada (Toronto/GTA area?) that has it for sale? Or something?
If not, then I'll just quit being lazy and make some. :whiteflag:
(I know it doesn't take much time and it's only lately I've been busy, but I'm just curious if there is a place or not if anyone knows.)

Nagoyankee 07-16-2008 07:35 AM

Grilled slices of SPAM pork luncheon meat. I like that for a change once in a while.

How Do you Make Onigiri?

I've always seen the treat, but I've never tried it.
I'm wondering how you make it. I know with rice.
If someone could tell me how to make onigiri, it'd be much appreciated

Hackimoto 07-17-2008 05:58 AM

I've never made the stuff myself, but try this

How to Make Onigiri - wikiHow

MonsterMonster 07-17-2008 05:59 AM

Ah, thanks so much!

sillygodxdisco 07-17-2008 06:22 AM

if you look in some places, they sell onigiri makers .. like a triangle shaped thing that you put rice in, then press it down with the top. it's like an onigiri cookie cutter. it's what i use because i absolutely suck at trying to make them by hand >_< idk where though because i think my grandparents sent it to us from japan but if you look in asian stores or something you'd probably find it.

MonsterMonster 07-17-2008 06:24 AM

Ooh, I'll have to look somewhere then. Thanks.
:P I want to attempt at shaping one by hand. If I fail, I shall go in search of the "onigiri cookie cutter"

sushidushi 07-21-2008 01:36 AM

I tried fried tofu, which I rinsed, fried with some carrot, and then added a mixture of rice vinegar, shoyu, sake and sugar to the pan and cooked it for a coupel of minutes till the liquid evaporated. That then went in to onigiri. They were not pretty, owing to my incompetence in making onigiri, but they tasted pretty good! :)

Yeah, it's the kind that comes in cans.

TalnSG 07-27-2008 12:00 AM

The other day I made some with oshinko and it was a nice finish to lunch. And it kept me from munching on way too much oshinko like when I keep a container of it the office fridge.

sillygodxdisco 07-27-2008 03:48 AM

ishikawa 07-27-2008 04:30 AM

TokyoRain 08-11-2008 01:33 AM

some stuff I've found I liked

I've also been using mainly salmon with sea salt, it turned out very good. Another one I tried that I really loved was vanilla yogurt, grapes/apples, and walnuts. It's very sweet and makes a good desert or breakfast.

sounds pretty good as stuffing for a crepe

MelonJuiceBox 08-13-2008 04:17 PM

I like tuna & mustard filling. It's soooo good!

ishikawa 08-15-2008 07:18 AM

My grandma used to make me Onigiri. But I don't like Onigiri. I like Spam Musubi, brah.

sushidushi 08-17-2008 01:17 AM

I've seen it in Sanko (on Queen Street in Toronto), which is a useful, if rather over-priced Japanese grocer. There must be other places in Toronto. There is also, I understand, a big Japanese area in Scarborough, but that's a bit far for me, so I've not actually been yet.

AnimeBaby112 10-22-2008 07:04 PM

i made Onigiri two days ago and i put steamed carrots and steamed salmon in them. it was very good.

ThirdSight 10-22-2008 09:06 PM

I'm missing out I guess.

I've never had one.

FlyingShutterShades 10-31-2008 02:49 PM

i want to get the supplies for it badly, i've always wanted to make onigiri. except i wouldn't put filling or seaweed, i'd just eat the rice. so i guess i want to make rice balls. :/

MissMisa 10-31-2008 02:52 PM

I wouldn't want one with filling... I hate any kind of filling type smooth creamy type stuff 0_0 Ugh ugh ;_; Like mayonnaise or anything like that 0_0 buhh ;_;

So, the same as the poster above really, I'd wanna make riceballs :p

Trouble 11-01-2008 07:40 PM

Boiled nori, miso paste/soy sauce (you need to cook it in a pan), and tuna.

Emone 11-06-2008 10:23 PM

nori comes in a small black jar and it has these kids on it... it's awesome, or try furikake

Trouble 11-09-2008 02:38 AM

Nori...in a jar? I've seen it in bags but not in jars. You mean the boiled nori?
