What Does it Say

well here is my 2nd topic.

I got this for christmas and I must say I was quite surprised my parents got me this as they are not very keen on anything japanese. I've gone through at least 200 Kanji to find out what this means but no luck so I decided to post a picture and see if any of you know what it says. Thank you ^_^;

I dont know those kanji if thats what you are asking.. if your asking what it says on the book, it simply says hiragana.katakana.

Well done for learning the writing systems, by doing this your instantly better than oooo 70% Of JF At japanese language, well done!

Just becareful with that hachimaki, the flag is part of 旭日旗(きょくじつき) and a symbol of the former Japanese empire's army (the flag used to invade much of Asia and pearl harbour incident). You'll probably get hassles from Chinese and Koreans if you wave that around. The fact that 万歳 is written in its old character form makes it a bit worse.

wow thank you so much guys I am so very grateful and I'm kinda surprised I thought it was just the normal hinomaru in the center like the todays japan flag that stood for the Imperial Japanese Army. yeah sadly I have received some cold stares from alot of the people who work in the chinese restaurant in town because I decided to bring my Hiragana Katakana Book for Study, they shooed me out lol. anyway thanks again. :)

They shouldn't give you hassels with a Japanese text book but Kyokujitsu Flag is a definite no no.

I thought banzai was written like this 万才...always a lot to learn in here.

It's 万歳 but in this case, 万 is what's called 略字(りゃくじ). Simplified character after WWII. 旧字体(きゅうじたい) or the original form of 万 is 萬.

I think I need to look for a book about the history of Japanese language and writing system. The more I look at replies here in the forum from native speakers the more I realize I have huge gaps to fill in. Just knowing there is a onyumi and a kunyumi starts being too little for me, I need to widen my knowledge a little bit.
